One reason may be that your writer may be old and the lense must have died.

another is that the lense require cleaning.

the last one is that you need to upgrade the drivers and firmware for your writer. if its sony, you will get here. otherwise you have to find out in google the required firmware.

If all the above things dont work, replace it.

when was the last time was it working???
have you tried doing a system restore.
check for the device manager if the drive is detected under CD/DVD option.
if not try to instal the basic chipset drivers for your laptop and see if that works.

Dvd cdrom drivers

The DVD ROM is part of the system and doesn't require drivers to "Work". I suspect if the DVD is not shown in My Computer, the drive is faulty.

Dvd not working in xp

hi,
what that means is your dvd drive if fine and there is no hardware issue, this is a driver issue
the problem can be resolved by going to your desktop manufacturers website and reinstalling the drivers, if you have the driver media with you you can

right click my computer> properties> device manager > then remove the dvd drive from here
by selecting and removing it and then restart your system
when your system will restart the dvd drive will be redetected and now either xp will install the default drivers on its own or it will ask for driver cd/dvd if it asks for driver cd.dvd put it in and then install the drivers and it will work.

further queries are welcome
