Could be a conflict between drivers- check your control panel/devices for red check marks
If this shows nothing, download the 'input devices' from the Dell website to see if this helps.
Usually all dell system are provided with ALPS touchpad. First check whether ALPS is installed or not from (control panel -> programs). If installed go to (control panel -> mouse) then you will see a tab called "dell touchpad". click on the image, you will see touchpad window settings. There check the checkbox (Display icon in taskbar). If the ALPS touchpad is not installed please go to dell driver download site and download and install that.
Hi, the laptop touch pads have an icon near the clock or u can find it on the control panel, there is a check mark that said" mouse reverse"or "mouse look up" or something like that, uncheck it to work properly and download the latest driver, kind regards
Disabling the touchpad on a Dell Inspiron can be useful when typing for long periods of time, or using an external mouse. Bumping or tapping the touchpad while typing can cause cursor jumping and unwanted results. Use the touchpad software to enable or disable touchpad controls. Download the driver for your touchpad at the Dell Support website.
Click on the "Touchpad" icon in the task bar. If the icon doesn't appear, you can download and install the driver for the touchpad from the Dell website, or choose "Start" and "Control Panel." Choose "Device Select" on the touchpad menu, or choose "Mouse" in the "Control Panel" menu and "Device Select." Click "Disable" under "Touchpad" to turn off the touchpad, or click "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick When a USB Mouse is Connected." h
Proceed according to the website instructions till you get a list with Categories of drivers. Expand the Mouse&Keyboards section and look for drivers with "Applies to: Touchpad/Pointing Stick"-Statements. After downloading them install them by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
Right click on the open space of the desk top > Personalize > Mouse Pointers (yes, mouse Pointers ) > click the red pointer to change touchpad settings > Button settings > disable both Touchpad and Touchpad buttons > OK
What you can initially do is to update the driver.
Press on the windows key + R. A run box will appear.
Type devmgmt.msc then click on ok. The device manage will appear.
Click on the plus sign besides mice and other pointing devices.
Right click on the item that will be pertaining to your touch pad.
Choose update driver and let the internet work for you.
If this does not work, you will need to totally reinstall the driver.
On the same screen (device manager) right click on the touch pad driver again, the choose uninstall.
follow the prompts for uninstallation. You might wanna uninstall any mouse related drivers as well (these application can also cause conflicts thus causing your touch pad not to work)
download the touch pad driver available from the link I provided below.
follow the prompts for installation.
restart

It this does not work, you will need to call Dell Technical Support to have the laptop serviced. That is if the portable still has warranty. If not, then you will need to buy a USB mouse as a replacement.

first, make sure the latest touchpad driver is installed. after that, go to control panel, click the mouse icon and on the mouse properties, you should see a touchpad tab where you can find the option to disable it if you use an external mouse. hope this helps. feel free to rate its usefulness
I have a Dell Vostro also..awesome units..but that's another subject..unfortunately the area you changed is the only place to manipulate the touchpad. What I ended up doing was buying a USB wireless mouse. Now I can control it and it doesn't have a mind of its own..it just a little glitch in the computer make-up...sorry couldn't provide a better answer but this time there is no better answer. Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.

Try unistalling the touchpad driver, and reboot. The machine will find the touchpad and reinstall the driver automatically. These have a tenancy to glitch when using an external mouse, and this should clear it up. Let me know.
