How do I take the hyperbolic tangent of a value

You'll find the hyperbolic functions in the MATH/Hyperbolic menu, available by pressing 2ND [MATH]. Alternatively, you can simply type in tanh(, enter the value, ), and ENTER.

For example, to compute tanh(1), press 2ND MATH, down-arrow eleven times, ENTER, 3, ENTER, 1, )(, ENTER.
Or t, ALPHA, a, ALPHA, n, ALPHA, h, (, 1, ), ENTER.

If the calculator gives the answer as "tanh(1)", convert it to a numerical value by pressing diamond, ENTER.

I've replaced the 4 batteries in the back of my calculator, but it still doesn't turn on. I have quite a few TI-83 calculators with this problem. (I'm a math teacher.)

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

My TI-84 Plus won't graph two functions at once. Only one equal sign highlights. My math teacher doesn't even know what to do and I really need two functions to show on one graph.

Turn the satistical plots OFF
Press [2nd][Y=] (STATPLOT). Select or enter 4: to execute the command [PlotsOff] [ENTER]

Clear the lists (statistical lists)
Press [2nd][0] (Catalog]. Press [PGRM] C. The cursor jumps to the first command in catalog that starts with C (The greek letters in names do not matter). Scroll down a bit to reach the command [ClrAllLists]. Select it and press [ENTER].

Try your graphs again.
If you still have problems, just reset the RAM:
Press [2nd][+] (MEM). Press 7 to select [Reset] then [1:All Ram][2:Reset]. Press [Clear] to erase the Ram Cleard message.

Now you should be able to draw the graphs.

Hope it helps.
Thanks for using FixYa.

All of my apps, gone !

Please do not dislike your math teacher, for your own sake: You will not learn much from someone whom you dislike. Now Relax.

All the applications that were preloaded in your calculator are available to download freely from Use the tab Download--> Apps and software. Then select software for the TI83/TI84 Family. While you are at the site download the TI Connect, if yoy do not have it already. The link follows. You can also download the latest OS there.

Install TI connect on your computer and run it to open the main Window. Then connect you calculator to a USB port and, in the TIConnect main window Click the TIDeviceInfo icon. Software will try to retrieve the info. If it does your calculator is ready to communicate with the computer.

If it tells you Device Not found , Click communication settings in same pop up window where it said Not found, and Select Device, Select Cable (USB or TIsilver cable), Select Port (USB1) and Click OK..

If you are lucky and it works, you can reinstall the OS, which can be downloaded from You drag and drop the OS on the TIconnect main window. Calculator must of couse be connected to computer. To install an application already downloaded to you computer, drag it to the main window of TI Connect and drop it. Keep installing, the appilcations you want.

If you have problem with TIconnect, use the calc-to-calc cable to transfer the Apps on a working calculator. Yous should be on Receive mode [2nd][Link] --->>Receive. (When both calculators are ready hit enter.) The other calculator, you guessed exactly right, must be on Send [2nd][Link][SEND][C:Apps]. A list of Apps appears. Scroll down the list. If you want to transmit un app you press [ENTER] when the arrow reaches its line. Once an app is selected , a small square appears on the left. After the selection, Hit transmit. I suggest you transfer Apps, one after the other. Avoid selecting them all and send them all at one go.

Hope it helps

Ti 84

I have a TI-84 Silver Plus and the same thing happened to me. I was desperate to fix it because I had math finals the next day. So I pressed the blue '2nd' button, and held down the down arrow and it worked! If that doesn't work, go see if it can be repaired somewhere!

then go and press second and the down arrow to lighten your screen. it should work.
