If the rechargeable battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

How long did you let it charge, when the device is completely drained of power it may not turn on at first when you connect it. Let it charge for a little while and come back to see if it fixes it. Failing that, your probably going to have to contact apple for warranty help.
I came across you question while looking to see if I could find answer to my problem with this model. But after all this time (~5+years) may be too late for you.
When you have the USB cable plugged in the unit turns off the display. Communication with the unit has to be through the H.R.M. Manager PC program.

indicator on the OLED screen will slowly fill over and over as
it is charging. When the charging is complete, the battery
indicator will stay filled.
