''USB Device Not Recognised'' Error message keeps coming up...

...whenever I plug anything into one of the USB ports.

I have an acer aspire 5101 laptop and it was fine on xp.

I installed vista and the problem appeared.

Any idea how I fix this please?

yes I have tried that, as far as I know all the drivers are updated and windows is updated.

If some drivers aren't there I wouldn't know which ones to install as nothing is showing as not working.

According to device manager there isn't anything without drivers.

I have the 32 version of vista.

I went onto the acer website where it gives you the option to download vista drivers and I downloaded them all and installed the ones it let me.

Also, according to the acer website, my laptop is compatable.

    I am totally baffled!

    Am I missing a driver??

Why would the usb ports stop working once vista is installed? Something is missing.....something needs to be installed to allow the ports to work.....but what??? how do I identify it??

  • al_will_robi Feb 01, 2009

couldnt find anything on that website and the hardware thing doesnt work im afraid.....

  • al_will_robi Feb 02, 2009

    yes i've tried that too.

I even ran the windows vista upgrade advisor and it came back ok.

It stated my usb ports as being called:

ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 2.0 EHCI controller

ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 EHCI controller

ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 EHCI controller

    All by ATI Technology

The driver seems to be up to date....

hi julie, tried all of those and still no joy.

when the error message comes up and you click it it shows that the usb device is unknown in bold.

when you click the bold 'unknown device', it shows it is hub1 that is defective. I know this because when I plug the usb device into all 3 ports I get... Port_#0001.Hub_#0001 and Port_#0002.Hub_#0001 and Port_#0003.Hub_#0001

I came across this website and tried this as a result....

    still didnt work.

    Then I tried this....

    also didnt work

    also didnt work.......

    totally stuck!!!!

I can see that hub1 isnt working, but why????

  • al_will_robi Feb 02, 2009

note that I have the following usb ports...

ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 2.0 EHCI controller
ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 EHCI controller
ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 EHCI controller

Which run off a ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver

from a AMD Radeon XPress X1100

which has the driver version 8.573.0.0 on 13/01/2009

ive emailed them and am awaiting a response...i am out of warranty though so i am not confident they will help.....

  • julie_s May 11, 2010

It looks like you've done everything right, but the problem remains.

Some connection is missing in Vista that allows your machine to see the ports. The machine was able to see the ports with XP, so you know that they worked. But they don't work now.

I think at this point I would go to the Acer site and post the question there. This could be a problem that's specific to your model of laptop.

You've spent a lot of time trying to correct this. I hope Acer can get this resolved for you.

  • julie_s May 11, 2010

I found this thread: that may help. It recommends altering the Registry -- something that can be very dangerous.

One "quick fix" that worked for a user was this: "I had to disconnect the power cord _and_ pull out the battery. Now everything works great."

Vista seems to be "stuck" in the "I can't find it" mode. If the MS website and your manufacturer can't help, I'd try pulling the battery and letting it "rest" for about 10 minutes. I'd try that before changing the Registry. If you do decide to make changes to your Registry, be sure to back it up. There used to be some free programs that would help with this. I use Registry Mechanic from PC Pitstop, but that's a paid program. may be able to offer some advice. I've been running their free scans for years and have purchased several of their products. I've found them to be reliable and have had no issues with scams of spyware from them.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

  • julie_s May 11, 2010

Do you mean the "Install New Hardware" wizard doesn't come up? It sounds like a problem with Vista. Have you tried a re-install of Vista?

  • julie_s May 11, 2010

Just a shot in the dark here -- try running the "Install New Hardware" wizard. You should be able to get to that through the Control Panel.

For some reason, Vista isn't recognizing the USB ports. Try here:

Hopefully someone else has had this problem and it's addressed on the MS site.

  • julie_s May 11, 2010

Have you updated the drivers for your devices? Check the manufacturer's web site (usually under "Support - Download - Updates") to see if there are drivers for your devices that are Vista ready.

Hopefully, You have your old xp files on your hard drive still (old dxutilities or files). You'll need to basically extract the driver for the usb ports form there and add it to your vista drivers list, but with vista, you never know. I stayed with xp because of ALL the problems vista is having.
If you can't find the driver in your old utilities, check your hardware profiles and get MFR name and type of usb (1.0 or 2.0 ...) and get the driver from them and install it to vista. Like I said, with vista, you never know, it may and say it installed, but it may not have. I hope this helps you.

Uninstall Vista because there are too many protections on software that used to work on XP. Vista was discontinued because of this. try installing XP service Pack 3. All your problems with anything in connection with Vista will disappear.

Setting up anything USB & "Device not recognised"

I see a lot of people are having problems with USB. USB is a wonderful standard. However it does have a habit of getting sorta tangled up, generally in the Windows hives/registry.
I am going to show you how to go about installing ANYTHING USB.
First: NEVER EVER, plug in ya USB device before ya install the Software and Drivers.
Second: After installing software & drivers etc. REBOOT.
Third: NOW, plug in your USB device, it should be detected and automatically install the drivers, OR it will ask where they are, navigate to where the files are kept, and they will install, after it has finished, REBOOT.
NOW you should be all good, and ready to use.
Now if you get at any time, "Device not recognised" first, try another USB port, if that doesn't work, & ya keep getting the message .
One thing to try is to go to device manager and TOTALLY remove/uninstall & remove drivers, from ALL USB devices from device manager. then REBOOT.
When windows restarts it will re-install the USB "Layer" all again, all new. Now you can start all again as above.

All USB ports not working

Sounds like a shorted out board. If you use a faulty device.. these can EASILY short out the USB controllers on the motherboard.

Alternative is to purchase a "PCMCIA USB expansion card" till you can replace the motherboard.

USB ports not working

I think the root issue of usb ports not working is a problem with your USB port's drivers no longer communicating with your computer. This often occurs when you install an update to your computer's operating system.

Acer aspire 5315 usb an not be recognised ???

I checked to see what a modern port tester would cost; I don't have one since I retired some years ago. They are still too costly for occasional use; the least expensive I found was still $50 US. If you have an independent (privately owned) computer store near you, I'm pretty sure they will have one and while I was in business, that is the kind of thing I would do as a courtesy; it would take 5 minutes and perhaps bond a customer to you for the future.
