Question about Dell Precision Workstation 470 (204816690) PC Desktop

System will not boot when monitors turned on

I know it sounds weird, but i've spent the past few weeks trying to figure this out. If my monitors are powered on my computer will not boot, turn the monitors on and the system locks up before loading windows. Replaced power supply, harddrive cables, installed a floppy because I thought I might have to flash the BIOS, when monitors are on system will also not boot from the floppy, CD or USB.
I gather now with this discovery of powering the monitors off during boot, that it is the video card that is causing the problem. But I am wondering if it is a software conflict or an actual hardware flaw.

I actually only use UPS's, and I had my office rewired actually, when I upgraded my electric service, a year or two ago. I have had the PC for close to four years now and have not encountered anything like this. I have to Dell 24" flat panels, running on an ATI 1650x I believe, PCIe. I guess maybe one of the UPS's could have gone, I will look into it. Unfortuanately I am pretty well shot with some sort of stomach bug at the moment. To really be able to test out the situation, I am going to have till I'm a little better. thanks for your response. I'm now wondering if the video card needs extra juice, as some cards sometimes require the additional power cable. I will have to look into that as well.

This may not be a video problem at all (hardware or software).

You say your "monitors" and it makes me wonder just how much you have plugged in to each of your power strips. Or extension cor

If you have a UPS, then you can take full advantage of all of the plug ports. BUT if you are using POWER STRIPS (these do NOT protect against power surges), then you need to look at what you have plugged in. Some big devices (system unit or "CPU" as some people call it, printer-especially the AIOs, MONITOR) pull quite a bit of electricity, moreso than speakers, a modem, or other small devices). Sometimes you need to have the big components plugged in to their own power source in order to work. You can't have them plugged together because there's just not enough power to go around.

I would try to spread the power around the room a little more, and then see if the system boots. Don't go rewiring your house, if it does!!! LOL. It's the computer systems we are using these days. I've also had fax machines, routers, and a few other things not want to work because they weren't getting their share of the "juice".

Well this usually happens! Its weird but I have no more theory, with a new Power Supply will not work, believe or not sometimes old computers [or in this case motherboard] will not even boot the BIOS with a different power supply than the one that the motherboard has always used, sounds weird but if you try it, you will see that will boot like if nothing happened before... give it a try and tell me how it goes... Best regards and LUCK!!! Luis

Monitor won`t turn on

It may sound weird but check that the motherboard battery cell is charged (the CR2032 coin battery). Some motherboards wouldn't power on if the battery is completely empty. Also clear the system setup via the jumpers on the board.
Try booting up with no graphic card installed and using the onboard graphics (if the board has a onboard GPU).
