Re: ps3 using digital optical and hdmi cables together

There is a conflict in the fact that HDMI gives you the digital surround sound without the need for the optical lead and when you allocate the optical for the sound thats when the conflict starts, you can only use one or the other.

Setting audio to optical makes hdmi video not work

Here is the solution - in the audio settings you have to select optical out or it will still use HDMI. Regards, Joe

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

My PS3 will not play sound on my Sony Bravia HDX275 surround sound system. I have the HDMI cable plugged from the PS3 to the TV. I have another HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV as well as a opitcal...

Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
Select in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) under in_setting.gif (Settings) in the home menu.
Select [Audio Output Settings].
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed. If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)
soundoutput003.jpg 6.
Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the in_left_key.gif button.
soundoutput002.jpg 7.
Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
  • [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
  • If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select in_setting.gif (Settings) > in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
  • If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
  • When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
  • If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.

Hope it helped.

I have no sound

Connect the HDMI cable from your PS3 to your T.V. for video, and connect your optical audio cable to your Home Theater. Hold your finger on the on/off switch of the Playstation for 5 to 10 seconds, you will have flashing blue and green lights while you hold it, then it will turn off (red). Then hold it again for another 5 or 10 secondsto turn it back on, keep holding it until the green and blue lights stop flashing. That resets the Playstation3 defaults. If you have an HDMI cable, you will see a message "HDMI cable detected, do you want to select it?" Say yes. Then you should get a second message about "Ps3 can automatically set optimal settings, yes or no" Again say yes. Now you should have audio and video through your T.V. Now to get the audio through your home theater, go to "system settings" (looks like a suitcase.) select sound settings...the PS3 should have selected HDMI already, change it to digital optical, and then move right to the optical settings, put a check mark in "Dolby Digital", and "PCM 44 mhz", and "48 mhz.." DO NOT...and I repeat DO NOT put a check mark in "DTS digital" If there is one there, uncheck it. That is what is screwing everybody up, that is a movie sound setting usually only found on high end music concert DVDs (like the Eagles) you will get no sound on some games and some regular movie DVDs with this setting selected. Move your screen right once more with your left "save" and Voila!! Go start the game.

Simultaneous Optical & HDMI Audio on PS3

I'm almost positive it cannot stream the sound through two outputs by design. However if your TV has a digital optical output you can run it to the TV via HDMI and from the TV to the receiver go with the optical. It shouldn't bother the quality at all being HDMI is also a digital interface, you're just passing it through your TV.

Audio decoding

You will need to tell the PS3 to use the optical cable for digital output in its setup, as well as tell your amp to use the optical cable as the input for whichever 'source' you wish to have associated with the PS3.

you might want to try changing the settings settings just go to sound settings>audio output settings and choose the type of cable you're using sfter that select automatic and press X. if that doesnt solve the problem may be you accidentally chage the BD/DVD audio output format. is locate in BD/DVD Settings change both BD/DVD audio output format (HDMI) and BD Audio Output Format (optical Digital) to linear PCM or viseversa try both to see wich one works.
p.s. it can also be a problem with your sound/ hometheater system.

Optical sound problem

i have the same problem with the RZ-4900AV, it manifests itself when any video application runs through either the optical or coaxial input. in my case it's definitely not the optical cable itself, which works fine on another receiver. optical or coaxial input of audio CD's is fine, but a DVD video on the same DVD player gives the high pitched whine. the same with the PS2 on the optical input, audio CD in the PS2 no problem, PS2 game or DVD video gives the whine... i think, unfortunately, it's a crap receiver... and i solved the problem by buying a RZ-6900AV, which works perfectly in exactly the same environment.
