You need the driver for the device. If the HDD came with a disk you will need to install that beore hand. =) Hope this works.

Suspect that the interface inside your external HDD case is toast. I'm assuming it's a USB interface. Typically inside your external case is a USB to IDE/SATA disk interface that converts the USB signals to something (IDE or SATA ) the disk drive understands.
At this point, and based on what you have posted, I would recommend 1. dismantal the external case and ensure all cables and interface plugs are well attached. If still no joy, then (2) determine what interface the disk drive has (either by looking up the disk spec on-line or by recognizing the interface) then purchasing or borrowing another disk case and switch in/out the interface or disk drive. Use the disk model number from the drive to find out what the interface is.

Hi,

It seems that your Harddrive has problems with internal Micro USB connector. WD, Transcend and Seagate brands are having such kind of problems.

Try to adjust the micro usb cable in such a way that your data transfer or ongoing activity will not hamper. Else to have perfect solution on your problem, backup complete data from the HDD and hand-over the HDD to the nearest WD technical department.

They may diagnose the issue and if not resolvable, will handover new WD Harddrive.

Thanks,
Amar

I have a USBPRO250 I cannot download onto my laptop.

all external HD have a small circuit board , this board will replicate the
computers IDE cable and send it as a USB so the computer can
recognize the drive and is important not to have an OS installed on
the redundant drive , once an external HDD is formatted for use it
will work on any computer , however it still is possible to contract
a virus on the static HDD , procedure for installing anything from the
static HDD is simply double clicking on the program file or application
you want or right clicking to send the data to your OS enabled Drive
check all cables power and data also check the USB port to make
sure it is in working order , also if there is a spinning noise spinning
up then down up then down the HDD heads are malfunctioning the
unit must reach its max RPM to function properly , if nothing still works give me more information and I will be happy to assist you .

Unrecognized external HDD

This message usually indicates one of two things:

1 - The driver for the device is not loaded or has become corrupted (I trust that one of the other troubleshooting steps you took included reinstalling the drivers...) or more likely,

2 - The device has malfunctioned. More likely than not, the hard drive itself is OK, only the electronics in the case has failed.

If the device is still under warranty, give Maxtor Customer Service a call and get it replaced. Of course all of the data you have will be gone unless you can convince them to send you ONLY the replacement case and electronics, not the hard drive. In which case you will have to open the old case, remove the hard drive and put it into the new case.

The hard drive is not being detected on our laptop it turns on and everything but its not being detected what is the problem its not even a year old yet.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.

HDD Not detected

First things first .....check for power cable and data cable and make sure they are not tampered or damaged now move to next step>>>
kindly remove all jumpers in HDD now go to
Control panel>Administrative tool>Computer management>Disk management
you can see the disk here and change settings accordingly like assigning path and drive letter if this does not work
then just see that is it recognized in device manager as unrecognized device then update driver for HDD even now if the problem persists
KIndly consult the manufacturer

Thanks And Regards

Is the drive running when connecto to power ans PC?
Try it on another PC.
Check the power supply if it is operated from an external power supply.
It it is self powered via the USB then this is a possible problem- the PC power supply cannot cope - Removing other USB devices may help here
