Hi, its not good news im afraid the reason it shuts down and gives you a ref light is due to damage being done to the circuit board inside the ps3. it could be that it has over heated which is often the case this could be down to dust build up or if the heat sink paste on the gpu and cpu chip has gone brittle or if you have been using the ps3 on carpet or in top of anything else that gives off heat such as dvd or sky box, these cause it to over heat really quick.
right now you have a couple of options if you have any warranty left take it back and get a refund if your warranty has run out then you could try getting it repaired but their is no guarantee the repair will work or how long it will work after the reapir.
as you have got the red light this does mean the console has over heated and their is a fault with the board so its not going to work again the way it is.
now i repair these for 25 quid plus parts so you need to look around if you want it repaired and see what the best price you can get.
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks
Playing dvd's fine but freezing on games and other things signifies to me a problem with the lead free solder. The main difference is that the dvd movie playback can run on CPU power alone but when you put a game in the GPU starts working and this is where the problems start.
When the Xbox 360 overheats it causes the lead free solder to crack, the more that crack the worse the machine will get. So eventually i suspect your machine will die completely and show either 3rrod or e74.
To remedy this you need to strip the console down and replace whats called the X-Clamps, at the same time replace the heatsink paste and then you need to re-heat the whole board. We use a special IR over which re-bakes everything and re-seats the solder properly, a lot of people use a heatgun but you have to be very careful.
from the description you stated it sounds like the following error code
E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.
Try restarting the console.
If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
Turn the console off.
Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
Firmly reconnect all the cables.
Turn on the console.
Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green
try that and if nothing works I have more to follow.
