Automatic transmission Shift problem

31/01/ 2009

I wonder if you could help me solve following problem with my car!!!
I own a preowned 1991 Model Mitsubishi Galant since last 10 years. It is an automatic transmission car. It has developed this problem- the gear works OK when I begin to drive after I first start the car & begin to move–I mean it has good Up-Shift from 1st-2nd-3rd-Overdrive. But if I reach 80KPH plus speed & then have to slow down the downward shift is rough and also it gets locked to whichever position it reaches- I mean if I slow down to where it down-shifts to 2nd gear it would not Up-Shift to third & O.D. & if it down-shifts to 1st gear it would stay in 1st only. The only way to release from these gears is to switch off the ignition & restart the engine. Could anybody please enlighten me as to where lies the problem?
Thank you
Shuja

Abs light on wont shift out of park

Hi Judy , what kind of vehicle do you have ? Year an model ? ABS light has nothing to do with it not coming out of park . Problem with automatic transmission shift lock control ! Probably !
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.

?€¢
The park/neutral safety switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The park/neutral safety switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to de-energize. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the contacts in the neutral safety switch open and the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is de-energized.

Can I install a 4 speed automatic transmission in my 1991 chevy cavalier to get better fuel economy?

I assume your car has a standard shift right now. Automatic transmissions **** up more gas than a stick shift, so I would advise you to keep yor standard stick shift. Just don't go around burning tires and try to keep your motor RPM's as low as possible.

SUBARU AUTOMATIC GEAR BOX CAN NOT CHANGE IN DRIVE SHIFT

Check the transmission fluid level. If it is low, fill it. Otherwise, if you happen to have a Subaru Select Monitor or equivalent, then you can read the fault codes for the 4EAT transmission and it will tell you which internal solenoid valves are sticky. At that point you can either add a quart of stuff that says it solves transmission problems and hope for the best, disassemble the transmission and change the problem valves, swap the transmission for one that works, or take it to someone to have it repaired.
