Question about Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with In-Door-Ice Dispensing System

1 Answer

I have no power to the refrigerator light or the digital controls

It is a whirlpool side by side, four years old. Refrigerator is on the right with the controls and light mounted by two screw on the left. The inside light or the digital lights indicating the frig setting are not lit up. Can I test the wiring connection without melting down some of the controls...or do I just remove and replace?
Thanks,
Tom

    Thanks Peyton,
Excuse my inexperience, but the control to be replaced is the main control at the compressor and not the the small "circuit boards" of sorts at the temp control knobs inside the frig itself?
    Thanks Again,
    Tom

Your actual problem on this is the main control in the compressor compartment. unplug your refrig then remove this control unplug all connectors and reconnect. this will probably get you working temporarily In almost every case I've seen we ended up replaing the control board. thx peyton

correct! think of it like this. the boards in the refrig are like your keyboard on the computer just an input device. no power nor worky.

the board by the compressor is the motherboard or computer that sends and receives the power and info from the 2 boards inside.

If you will give me a model# for your fridge I'll get you a good part number. of course you may have already gotten it. I use the Sears parts system but use the part number they give me to find a better price.

You have a bad control board. The control board is not hard to replace. It is located in the bottom of the unit inside the plastic control board housing on the back of the refrigerator. Just make sure the power is disconnected and the wires are placed on the new board where they were on the old board. Here is the control board to order.

The part comes with a 365 day, any part, any reason return policy.

GE refrigerator is the worst product I have even

Well, i have to jump right in here and agree with you. I have been working on appliances since 1971 and GE is the most frustrating, highest priced replacement parts ( for the most part ) of all brands. Of all the brands, Whirlpool and Maytag have been the longest lasting, best priced and easiest to work on. I truly feel sorry for you....really.

The light and digital controls on the refrigerator side dont work

I replaced a circuit board that is in the white box at the lower left rear of the fridge. You will need to remove the cardboard cover, then there is two screws to loosen the box. The circuit board is inside. There is a white tab that sticks up push it sideways and it will pop right out. Put the plugs in the new board and pop it back in and put everything back together. Be sure the wires are routed so they do not contact the compressor.
If you want to test it first get a voltmeter one probe to CN1, the white wire, and the other to CN2, yellow wire with red stripe, there should be 120 volts. If not, or when the door is open it drops replace the board.
I did not have a voltmeter but it seems everybody that had a problem the fridge was 4 to 5 years old. So I bit the bullet, around $90.00, and replaced it and it works!

Whirlpool refridg side by side

This sounds like the compressor is bad. The clicking sound is the start relay trying to start the compressor and cannot. You stated that it was only four years old. Check the warranty for your frig. Most carry a five year warranty on the compressor.

Ticking noise getting louder, 30-year-old Whirlpool SbS Refrigerator

Hello strebig
Welcome

You said, you have a ticking noise in your 30 year old refrigerator?

Before we get started here.

Do you know thee efficiency difference between your fridge and any new one?
My fatherly advice is do not put another nickle in to your fridge.
You are putting good money in to bad!

Unfortunately you all ready spent the cost of a new one in the past ten years on electricity.
Today's new refrigerators will pay for them self in a few years and then be a hell of a lot less on your electric bill.
The change from a 30 year old fridge to today's models WILL show up on your electric bill!!!!!

I just read this article that you may find interesting.

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Whirlpool refrigerator stop cold but frosting bad

Hello Catherine Fu,
Welcome

You said, you got this whirlpool double door refrigerator for 4 years. cost me about 1.5k. the second year, right after warranty, the main brain is down-the light panel in the refrigerator is off. whirlpool tech told me to replace it will cost me 500, so you decide not to do it. Now you have bad frosting issue for 6 month. Inside the Refrigerator, the water keep on dripping on side wall and glass drawer ceiling. In the freezer, frosting all over each drawer, and the bottom drawer has too many frosting and ice that i can hardly close the door. Last night, the refrigerator section just don't get cold anymore, it shuts up by itself.
Help!! It is an very expensive refrigerator and ONLY 4 years old .

First,I think you need to have a new tech.
It sounds like you have either an air leak allowing out side air in and this causes the icing.
Or you may need some freon (coolant gas) .
If your freon pressure is low it can ice up.
Did that tech that was there check for a freon leak and also check the pressure of the freon in the lines???
You need to call a different tech and let him see what's happening.
Some company that is reliable!

Let me know what they do for you.
God bless, Huuum

Hello
Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,

I believe your problem is an old thermostat or compressor !
How old is it?

My advice is do not put good money into bad!
A new fridge will pay for itself in a few years by using a lot less electricity!

Here is an interesting report I just read!
