Go to the manufacturer website of the laptop and download the drivers for sound and the mic will get restored.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Typical PC mics need a power supply on the mic input. It's almost negligible current consumption, but it needs some DC voltage to be present. Sometimes the mic inputs are not well engineered or just faulty and this DC voltage goes away after some time.

My advice would be to obtain (borrow?) an USB headset (headphones with mic), and see if the problem occurs with them too. If not, you have a faulty mic input and will need to purchase such USB headset and enjoy.
If it does reoccur with a USB mic, then I'm as puzzled as you are... it must be a software thing, perhaps some auto-mute setting somewhere?...

Mic is a piece of ****. Lots of Comments about this but ZERO anw

do you have the Mic plugged into the mic jack on the sound card? and in is it plugged into the mike hole as there are up to five depending on the sound card. also slick on start click on control panel click on device manger and look to see if you have a yellow ! on the mic or unknown sound device if so left click on that device while on-line and update drivers on the web, if it does not show a mic or one that's ok double click on the sound or speaker control when the sound system pops up make sure the mic is not muted and recording device is turned on if not delete the mike from the device manager and have it detect it again and then install updates form the web, any more questions post a comment here and I will help you some more. need to know the sound card and what operating system you are running.

My microphone not working on my dell xps 420 vista system

double click on the speaker and make sure that the mic does not have the mute box with an x in it.

I am pretty certain you have a card in your computer for it mentions a 7.1 speaker system.
If you put your service code in to do a search for drivers you will get the correct ones for your particular machine. Download install and reboot.
If you are not using six speakers and one sub woofer then the pink one in the back is the mic

You can try to do a system restore, it's located under system tools in the start menu under accessories, it will allow you to go back to a time before you lost your built in mic.

I accidently deleted my mic settings i cant get them bk can somon

No, it's ok... you didn't delete them. Click on the START button on your task bar at the bottom of the screen. Go to where it says Control Panel. Once in there, click on Sound and Audio Devices. From there you can set up your mic. BUT... first... double click on the little speaker icon down by the time on your taskbar (bottom right of screen usually). That will bring up the mixer, make sure that your mic isnt set on mute.
