Question about Epson Stylus CX9400 Photo Printer
The scanner function is not working. All else (printing, copying and faxing) work fine. When trying to open the scanner I get an error message saying not able to start. Computer (running Vista) reports scanner in not connected. I've hooked up to an XP computer and scanner works. On the Device Manager (Vista) the Epson Scanner is listed under "Other Devices" -- with a yellow '!' When right clicking on the icon and pulling us 'Properties" you get this message: "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) The system cannot find the file specified." I have installed and reinstalled drivers several times. Still no luck.
From your Win Vista Computer;
1.) Try to uninstall ( epson scan ) in the Control Panel / Programs and Features ones it is removed.,
2.) Download TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.20A > epson12384.exe
3.) Ones it is downloaded and installed to your computer., try to launch epson scan ( if same issue persist )
>> On the Device Manager (Vista) if the Epson Scanner is listed under "Other Devices" -- with a yellow " ! " < right click on it and click on update driver., make sure that the option selected is " Install the software automatically (Recommended) and then press next > ..... you may need to restart your computer after this procedure..
>> Then try to scan again
Note >> if a pop on your computer for ( New hardware Found ) just ignore it / close it., after the scanner driver is installed it will go away.....

I believed that you're having this error
"Epson Scan Cannot be started...."
This issue is usually happened when there is a previous epson scanner driver installed or other imaging devices attached or installed to your PC. Here is what you can try to resolved your issue
1. Make sure that driver is indeed installed, then go back to Device Manager.
2. Right click on the Epson Scanner then update driver
3. Select the option that says AUTOMATIC and it will try to detect the driver that you've installed, if it is successfulm it'll copy the files necessary and after that the CX9400F will appear now under Imaging Devices in your Device Manager.
4. After that you might wanna restart WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). To do this go to your Control Panel and look for Administrative Tools, look for Services and on the LONG list, scroll down and look for WIA then restart this service.
5. Re-launch Epson Scan and have fun scanning.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: Scanner Not Recognized
You need to remove the yellow question mark on the device manager. Click on the plus sign of the Question mark icon. Right click on the item that will be displayed under the question mark and then uninstall. You need to uninstall the drivers as well. you can doo it on add/remove programs(winxp) or program features (vista). Unplug the USb cable/ Download drivers from support.epson.com and you just need to choose the right driver for your windows version. After Installing the TWAIN driver and Epson scan utility, you need to restart computer. When computer is ready you can plug in the usb cable and open up Epson Scan on your desktop
