Epson Stylus CX9400 Fax

The scanner function is not working. All else (printing, copying and faxing) work fine. When trying to open the scanner I get an error message saying not able to start. Computer (running Vista) reports scanner in not connected. I've hooked up to an XP computer and scanner works. On the Device Manager (Vista) the Epson Scanner is listed under "Other Devices" -- with a yellow '!' When right clicking on the icon and pulling us 'Properties" you get this message: "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) The system cannot find the file specified." I have installed and reinstalled drivers several times. Still no luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed all the steps, and the scanner is still not working.

I have the same problem and went through over an hour working with an Epson support person to no avail.

Scanner works on XP and with my wifes HP running Vista but not with my new Dell 530. I used PC Mover to move over programs from my XP machine to the Vista machine. Everthing else works but the Epson scanner. We uninstalled software, removed registry sections, deleted any remaining Epson traces but scanner still won't function.

Follow up on my epson scanner issue (from Jan. 31). Went as far as removing all Epson files from the registry. (followed directions from Epson).
Had to re-read Dcwarz post from Feb. 10 because the same exact thing happened to me. With using PC mover and having scanner work on my wife's HP running Vista. Have tried all the above and still not able to get scanner working.

    Dcwarz here,

Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and it tries to install the new drivers but stops along the way noting it found the driver but encountered an erroe while attempting to install it.

I was on the phone with Epson for over an hour to no avail, on this issue. They don't know what to do. I suspect it is a Vista USB issue because I just install a Logitec webcam and Vista won't recognize the integrated microphone but did accept the Video driver.

Searching the internet there are a lot of USB issues with Vista and not much help from Microsoft on the problems. I should have stayed with XP on my new PC.

Sorry folks. Tried all three Options from: Smithbrother; Van_Fanel and Bunso26 -- Still no luck. Scanner works fine on wife's HP, but not on my Dell.

  • Dcwarz May 11, 2010

Van...... I tried your suggestion several times, even uninstalling the Epson all together. However, when it trys to install the driver an error message still comes up stating "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered and error while attempting to install it." Then it lists the Epson printers for the driver driver such as CX0400Fax. And "The system cannot find the file specified.

This same error message comes up with my new Logitech web cam for the integral microphone. The webcam works fine but it won't install the microphone.

For both I've identified the new Vista 32 drivers but the install is stopped during the install process.

From your Win Vista Computer;

1.) Try to uninstall ( epson scan ) in the Control Panel / Programs and Features ones it is removed.,

2.) Download TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.20A > epson12384.exe

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=90753&prodoid=63070382&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows

3.) Ones it is downloaded and installed to your computer., try to launch epson scan ( if same issue persist )

>> On the Device Manager (Vista) if the Epson Scanner is listed under "Other Devices" -- with a yellow " ! " < right click on it and click on update driver., make sure that the option selected is " Install the software automatically (Recommended) and then press next > ..... you may need to restart your computer after this procedure..

Additional work around., I was not aware that you have a web cam connected or installed to your computer......

Note ::>> camera, video camera, web cam, scanners are Imaging devices

You could try to disconnect other Imaging devices to your computer when your attempting to install the
Epson Scan to your Computer., make sure the only printer connected is the cx9400f

Hello,

I believed that you're having this error
"Epson Scan Cannot be started...."
This issue is usually happened when there is a previous epson scanner driver installed or other imaging devices attached or installed to your PC. Here is what you can try to resolved your issue

1. Make sure that driver is indeed installed, then go back to Device Manager.
2. Right click on the Epson Scanner then update driver
3. Select the option that says AUTOMATIC and it will try to detect the driver that you've installed, if it is successfulm it'll copy the files necessary and after that the CX9400F will appear now under Imaging Devices in your Device Manager.
4. After that you might wanna restart WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). To do this go to your Control Panel and look for Administrative Tools, look for Services and on the LONG list, scroll down and look for WIA then restart this service.
5. Re-launch Epson Scan and have fun scanning.

Hope this helps

Download the VISTA driver that you need. Either 32 or 64bit. Epson web link for your model below:

You have alread rated me but, I was still wondering if you disconected the printer/scanner then uninsrtalled the software through the "add and remove programs" then reinstall the software that you downloaded for VISTA.
Another question that comes to mine is does it still show the driver to be missing?
Lastly, have you gone to the Epson website to the Q&A and found you problem listed there? I have never seen this problem after installing the corrected driver(s) but I doubt you not.
I would write to Epson, since they claim compatability with yuor VISTA for your model.

SOURCE: Scanner Not Recognized

You need to remove the yellow question mark on the device manager. Click on the plus sign of the Question mark icon. Right click on the item that will be displayed under the question mark and then uninstall. You need to uninstall the drivers as well. you can doo it on add/remove programs(winxp) or program features (vista). Unplug the USb cable/ Download drivers from support.epson.com and you just need to choose the right driver for your windows version. After Installing the TWAIN driver and Epson scan utility, you need to restart computer. When computer is ready you can plug in the usb cable and open up Epson Scan on your desktop

Scanner bulb doesn't turn on during a scan

You can try to get and replace the scanner light. If it was the light, the new one will work. If it was some other electonic component that shut off the light, then the light won't work. Depends on the cost of a new light compared to getting the unit serviced by a tech. Or the cost of a new Multifunction unit. Do some research before you make the decision.

Printer prints blank sheets

I would suggest resetting the printer options to Default first. If that doesn't do it then reinstalll the complete printer software and be sure to deleted all the old software. To delete files completely download <AppCleaner> it's free and is fantastic. Your last resort is to then call Epson Tech Support.

Cx9400fax

Epson Quick Guide is incorrect.

Not sure of your exact situation but .........
Your answering machine MUST be connected directly to the output of your CX9400 and you can't use an answering machine with multiple "mailboxes". Set your answering machine to 4 and your CX9400 to 5/6 rings. Epson "Technical Support" has no clue of this problem .... yet.

The machine routes the call to your answering machine, it it's an incoming FAX and the answering machine starts the CX9400 will recognize the incoming transmit signal, turn on the FAX function, and disconnect your answering machine.

You may need to adjust the CX9400 rings setting based upon the duration of your answering machines announce message (longer message = greater number)
