Question about Acer Aspire 4520-5582 Notebook

1 Answer

Hi I am using windows media center on an Acer Media Center PC (Aspire). It is connected to my ampli using an optical cable. So realtek audio displays an icon for "realtek digital output" and one for "speakers". Through trial and error in the past I found out that the first is for the digital connection (optical cable), the latter for the analog connection (red/white cinch). I've had problems in the past, which I was able to resolve by playing with enabling and disabling devices or rebooting the PC, reconfiguring the sound in the WMCenter application, ... but it was never clear what exactly resolved my problem. Meanwhile the problem has occurred a couple of times again and it appears that the best solution is just to stop using the media center (the PC is then put in some kind of "standby" mode) and try again the next day. Until now this has always worked. When the problem occurs, everything SHOULD be working but it doens't. The little green "volume" bars next to my realtek output device icon in the "sound" box move nicely up and down when playing test sounds, but no sound to be heard.... You can imagine that it is quite frustrating to have to believe that not doing anything is the only way to fix the problem, but never knowing when the problem will re-occur (and it does re-occur) is even more frustrating. My current thought process lead me to believe that the problem is really related to the standby function. I can't find any useful information on forums or elsewhere, so I don't know what to do... Any idea how I can resolve this problem once and for all??

Usually when a computer displays a "Media Test Failure" message, it is a good indicator that the hard drive is/has failed. The solution would be to replace the hard drive in the laptop.

My acer t310 no sound.. maybe because i didn't install sound card or something

You need to install the audio drivers for your computer. This can be found on the disk that came with your computer. Click here to download the audio driver On-Board Realtek RTL8100C. Or you may need to install the Onboard C-Media Audio driver it is located a third from the top. Depends on the audio controller used on your mainboard. Try the Realtek one first, if this doesn't work then try the C-Media audio driver.

Thanking you

Acer AX1700-U3700A with variable Audio on HDMI

Your problem isnt in your PC, it's because you chose the onboard sound to listen to music etc, which is normal. Unfortunately, you need to choose the HDMI Audio output if you want sound on your TV FROM the HDMI cable. Right click the sound icon located to the lower right side of your screen and choose (adjust audio properties). Now go to the audio tab and click the output device window and choose your HDMI audio output, whatever it may be called. Just pick the one that wasn't selected when you opened it and click ok or apply. Now all audio output is controlled by your Video card lol. Crazy aint it?

Connecting media center to receiver

Hey there,

Okay let me start with your pc setup. What type of sound card are you using? Are you using onboard? You have to check and see if the sound card or device you are using supports SPDIF passthrough. Basically this does just what it says...passes the surround sound signal through your hardware with no onboard decoding and uses the decoder found on your stereo. I use a soundblaster Audigy and i had to enable passthrough in the audio console. I also had to enable spdif as my default audio playback device. This is in Windows Vista. You also need to go into properties and set the formats your receiver supports. Once that is complete you need to adjust the audio settings in media center and select toslink as your audio output and select 5.1 audio.

Things should work now...BUT...you will only get surround sound audio when watching a source that has dolby 5.1 or DTS. You will not get surround sound in games =( When i watch ota hd shows that have dolby audio, the blue light kicks on in my receiver and i get 5.1 audio. Same goes for watching DVD's. I hope this helps you out

No sound if audio is set to realtek digital output

THe realtek Digital Output will only output sound if you have an optical cable attached. this allows you to connect your laptop a audio receiver via an optical cable. this is why you get no sound when it is set to digital output.
