Question about Toshiba 61HX70 61" Rear Projection Television

Picture gone screwy

Last night I was attempting to clear up the picture on my 6 year old 61HX70 by tightening the coaxial cable. After unhooking and rehooking it, I noticed that the picture had become distorted and the colors were not lined up correctly in the corners. It has 2 "lines" that scroll up the screen and each time the scroll the extent of the lineup on the colors changes. Along with this the sound has changed somewhat to a somewhat muted audio with some static in the background. Any idea what might have happened and what it would take to fix this?

Ok, so I have ordered 2 of the IC's (STK392-110E). I should get them this week and will get them installed this weekend. I am a little concerned about getting that board out. There are 2 white connectors that appear to jump from 1 board to another. Is there a trick to getting the board out?

Ok, I got the chassis out, but I have 1 board/box that is preventing me from getting to the IC's. It appears to be soldered in. Best way to get this out or get around it? See pics...

Ok, I replace the IC's, but the problem is still there, maybe even worse. Anyone want a slighty use 61" TV?

I do have a service manual, but tracing circuits is beyond me. Looks like I will need to call a service tech if this is to be fixed.

I had a guy who was coming out to work on it but he was a no show. I plan to call him the first of the week and see what happened.

Did you end up taking this in for service? If so, were they able to fix it?

The two lines, do they appear like a picture in 3-D? If that is the case, the convergence amp IC's probably were weak already, and took a dive when you were adjusting the set. As when the picture changes, so do the voltages on the power supply shift a little. I think you may have a power supply problem as well. Probably a capacitor in the main supply that gives you the plus and the negative voltages for the convergence. If you have the knowledge of soldering and working on printed circuit boards, you can change the two convergence IC's first. After that measure the + and the - voltages on the IC's and see if they are low or vary any significant amount. If you cannot solder, maybe a relative, friend, or maybe a neighbor can assist you, as changing the convergence IC's is not really difficult. A repair person will charge you anywhere from 300 to 400 bucks for a job like this. The IC's only cost about 15 bucks or so each. Good Luck, and let me know if you can handle this repair and if you need any more information's regarding this repair. Oh, one more thing, it is always a good ideal to get the service manual for this set, so you will know what and where everything is and can make any adjustments after the repair. The manual is available Here; http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=0&model=61HX70

slde the entire chassis out of the set and disconnect the plugs you need to. Just be sure they are marked or you will need to mak them somehow.

you may have a few resistors or circuit protectors blown in the set. This is very common problem in these TV sets. What part of the country are you in?

Oh too far for me I'm afraid. I live way up north in Northern Michigan. Do you have the service manual on this set and can you do circuit traces and check voltages with a multimeter?

Oh too bad, if you can trace maybe I can help, but it is good that you know your limitations, as you do not want to get involved over your head, and maybe end up hurting yourself, possibly seriously!

You have bad convergence amps. The fluid may need to be changed if the picture had a hazey look to it before the convergence went bad.

It's likely the Ssb is out, Philips p/n# 319801634710 which on a difficult scale of 1-10 is about a 6 or 7 for repairs. That is a DPTV310 chassis and somewhat tight quarters inside. It's not so bad taking the strappings loose to get at the board but a tight area to work through getting the standup board unplugged from the signal board. One noteable caution: unplug the set for at least 10 minutes before opening the back VERY STATIC SENSITIVE..

How do I decrease the amount of green in the picture?

Unfortunately this model has a bad CRT. If is 3-4 years old and the greenish picture is in all inputs, for sure the picture tube is gone. If the picture is green only in component input check the connections for the blue and red cables.

Toshiba model 61HX70 convergence issue

It is a good possibility you damaged something on that PCB that had the IC's, I like to use an upgraded chip the STK394-160e that is designed for HD signal stresses. I dont know why they ordered the convergence board but I suspect it would have been ok, there are also 2 jumpers that need soldering JW10 and JW50 that supply power to the chips and they REQUIRE resoldering or it will fail again. Might try reseating the RED CRT board, check for cables that you may have unhooked to see if they are not seated in their sockets properly, double check every wire you unhooked, Make sure you used a Silicone Heatsink Compound on to the back of the IC's. I dont know what all you unhooked, but check the wires going between the CRT Boards. Check for cracks in the boards to make sure they werent flexed to much. Good Luck.
