Now we have sound but no picture. Is it worth fixing or should we buy new?
No, I wouldn't say it's worth fixing, as the panel could have a burnt out backlight, or even circuitry issues. This could cost around 100-150 bucks to fix, or you can buy a new one for around 80. So, I would say, just buy a new one.
