> these files play fine on Windows Media Player

Then, continue to use Windows Media Player.

Or, tell us what alternative program that you use that gives "sound-and-no-picture" or "picture-and-no-sound".
What version of that program?
Windows XP? Vista? 7?
Any more "possibly-relevant" details ?

My laptop has lost sound, there is a little red cross on my sound symboll and its telling me there is no audio oupt device installed?

Right clcik on the sound symbol see if it opens up if it does check the mute button box and then close it and see if you have sound. If still no sound go to windows update site and update the drivers and windows media player, they are constantly updating the drivers for sound and this can cause your system to not have the new codecs to run. good luck.

Lost sound

Fixed this common problem several times with vista updates.
Simply reinstall the drivers for your sound card, via the system properties console, click hardware, right click the sound system properties, and choose to find and reinstall drivers automatically.

No sound on the PC

Hi,
Thanks for asking for solution,I would require some additional info.
1. Does windows media player give you an error while playing the file ?
2. Is the problem only in windows media player ? eg, are you getting windows startup sound.

In the meantime try system restore , take the computer back to the date when it was working fine.

ps: do let me know the make of the sound card and which windows operating system you are using

Thanks
mandeep

MY U305 Satellite S7477 lost its sound after an normal update of the system. Any idea why it says : "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device....

okay get to device manager. the problem lies in the driver for your sound card. locate your sound device and uninstall it. then resart your computer. windows will reinstall it while it reboots. if that doesnt correct the problem go to the manufactures website and download the most current driver for the sound card
