I have a new Philips dvd drive. Everytime I insert any disk (cd or dvd) the computer just shuts down. I unchecked the option in XP to reboot on drive failure hoping to get an error message but it still just powers down. I've completely reformatted, changed IDE cables, changed master/slave slot, changed IDE channels, upgraded the drives bios but I still get the same thing.
Any thoughts?

first is that the only drive on the ide cable... second do you have the red stripe on the ide toward the power connector ?
