Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

2 Answers

I have brought a Western Digital Drive WD5000G032 home from the office with a lot of backup data that was transferred to it over ethernet. I am trying to copy it to my home server for additional security but when I plug the drive into any of my home PC's either running XP or Vista, the drive does not appear. I don't believe that I need seperate drivers. Can anyone help ? Many thanks Graham Price

It's a usb drive no drivers are needed. It may be blown if it's not showing up when you plug it in. When you transferred the data, was it plugged into the usb port and showing up as the drive that was receiving the data. I would check the machine that you used to transfer the data from it may have transfered it to a different drive, as this portable would have had to have been selected in the computer receiving the download or it would have gone to the C drive by default, and may be sitting on that computers drive.

Hi there go in google and type there data recovery software. you can get lot of softwares for data recovering. Then download one of them and recover the data from the Hard drive. After that format the driver and then transfer the data to your hard driver again. Thanks.

Western Digital HDD I need softwear to install WD5000G032

Their is no software for it, nor their is any requirement for any software to use this device, its a plug and play device like a flash drive. Just make sure you turn on the power for this thing before you connect the usb cable to it and then to the computer and you will see a device poping up if you have the My Computer window open up. If it does not come up then it means your new device is bad, simply get it replaced.

Time machine won't backup reliably. It recognizes the MyBook drive, but after a few days of doing backups, it fails to recognize the drive anymore.

It isn't letting me transfer files that are larger than 5 gigs to my WD external HD. Says not enough space. How do I make it so I can transfer them?

Check to see what file structure the drive is formatted as. It's possible that it's formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS. If that's the case, backup your data from the drive, reformat, and then you can transfer the data back to the drive.

My Western Digital 320GB MyBook... Problem

If all you want to do is transfer data that you have backed up on your main computer then all you need to do is plug the drive into another computer, click on 'my computer' and click on the mybook drive to explore the data on it. To transfer a certain file just copy it and paste it onto the drive of the new computer.

If you are talking about backing up data from a second PC, you will need to install the WD software on that particular PC, and use the advanced backup menu. Just remember that if you back up a second computer, you need to create a folder for that data to be stored in, otherwise it is possible that it would overwrite the data from your first PC

in otherwords to back up several PCs the root of the WD drive should have folders in it labeled - 'PC 1', 'PC 2', etc

Hope this helps

Is there a way to recover lost data from my Western Digital My Book??

Yes, there is a way to recover lost data from a WD drive.

First thing first - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD.

The next step - get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.
