Cant set fax mode.Printer will fax out but will not receive a fax

I have been trying to get this printer to receive a fax but it want maybe you can help

  • Joe Fine May 11, 2010

Can you fax out? Check and see if you didn't set something in the fax setup on the machine. When you try to call it with a phone, does the machine see the incoming call? How many times did you let it ring?

How to receive fax

Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Phone line
  • Multi-function printer
  1. Step 1 Connect the multi-function printer to a phone line. Most printers with fax capability have more than one phone jack, so make sure you are plugged into the right one.
  2. Step 2 Turn the printer on and access the start-up menu. Pick an answering mode based on your expected usage of the fax capabilities of your machine (see the next steps for more information about this).
  3. Step 3 Put the printer in manual mode if you expect little fax traffic. The manual mode usually requires you to pick up every call that comes to the machine. If you hear the signal for a fax, you push the start button and hang up.
  4. Step 4 Choose the automatic mode if you expect a lot of faxes or have a dedicated fax line. In automatic mode, the printer listens to incoming calls and determines whether they are faxes or voice calls. Voice calls get sent on to your phone, and faxes are picked up by the printer.
  5. Step 5 Select the number of rings you want your multi-function printer to give you before dropping a call. If you are using the manual mode you may want to go with four or more rings. Two rings should be sufficient in the automatic mode.
  6. Step 6 Load paper into the paper tray. Check on the paper level frequently if you receive a lot of faxes.
  7. Step 7 Set the desired print quality, and you are ready to receive faxes.

You should be all set now to receive faxes.

The fax will not receive automatically even though it show's as being set to automatic

This issue can occur when the receive-to-PC setting was previously enabled for the PC connected to the printer, and the user is trying to enable this feature once again without disabling the previously enabled setting. This is because the receive-to-PC setting can be activated only from one computer.
Perform the following steps in the correct order to re-activate the receive-to-PC setting:
1. Turn the receive-to-PC setting off from the all-in-one printer control panel.
Here are the steps to be performed from the printer:
a. On the all-in-one control panel, press Menu .
b. Use the < or the > (left or right arrow) button to select Fax functions , and then press Enter .
c. After you selected the Stop Recv to PC setting (any faxes that remain in the all-in-one memory are printed).
2. Next, to turn the receive-to-PC setting on from the printer software, perform the following steps from the printer:
a. Open HP ToolboxFX .
b. Select the HP LaserJet 3050 / 3055 / 3390 / 3392 all-in-one.
c. Click Fax .
d. Click Fax Tasks .
e. Under Fax Receive Mode , select Receive faxes to this computer .
Performing the preceding steps should ensure that the user is able to select/activate the receive-to-PC setting.

Fax machine picking up all calls

You must set the FAX RECEIVE MODE to FAX ONLY. The factory default is FAX/TELEPHONE. You can find the proceedure to change FAX RECEIVE MODE in your owners manual. IIf you don't have an owners manual, try pressing the MENU button, then scroll to one of the following: INITIAL SET-UP, FAX SET-UP, OR FAX RECEIVE MODE. One of these should get you to the FAX ONLY receive mode setting.
