Panasonic TZ1 flash problems!!

I own a panasonic TZ1 camera and I have problem with the flash. When i take shots with flash, the flash activates before the shutter, producing horribly dark photos, or the shutter closes with the flash but produces extremely washed, over exposed photos. Is this a known Panasonic camera problem? Does anybody know if Panasonic has posted anything about flash problems? Thank you, in advance!!

Hi, yes I have exactly the same problem and don't know how to fix it. Did you get anywhere with yours?

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2008

Yes the problem of mine is exactly the same. The flash activates before the picture is captured and the result is very annoying dark photo. I am really very much irritated with this.

The same problem, awful dark pictures even when the flash is on! The flash comes out way before the shutter and that's the result BLACK or DARK RED pictures at interiors... at the sun light is perfect! But I'm very dissapointed on my camera... I don't carry it with me anymore, I prefer to let it at home than to get angry when I can't take ´pictures whenever I want... I lost beautiful moments.

I just called Panasonic (800-211-7262) on this problem for my out of warantee TZ1. They said there is a flat rate $100 repair charge + $11.50 return shipping. He suggested that I include a credit card # or check to speed processing. Panasonic's Web site says:
If your camera model begins with DMC -----

If unit was purchased over 1 year ago, the flat rate repair charge is $161.50 (Return Shipping Included).
Please include a check or a credit card number to eliminate any delays in processing your repair.

Based on the previous poster's response that they fixed his camera at no charge, I'm going to send it to them with no $$ and see what happens.

Same problem. Flash doesn't synch with when picture is captured. Photos are dark and horrible. We don't even use this camera anymore -and it was expensive! - although we really liked it when it worked.

I'm trying to call the repair depot to see what can be done.

I like my camera BUT!!! I have the same issue with the flash not being in sync with the shutter. When I called Panasonic I was told that they have never heard of this problem and they had me restore the settings which I did and still it did not work. So they told me to send the camera and a check and they would repair it. The camera is two years old and shouId not have this isuue. I can buy someone elses new camera for less.

when using the flash pictures are black

  • pamtech Dec 29, 2008

I have the exact same problem! Thank you for posting your issue with Lumix DMC-TZ1. I am going to contact Panasonic tomorrow and see if I can get my camera fixed. I love my camera but taking dark red photos is really frustrating.

  • WildSea Jan 02, 2009

After working fine for 2-1/2 years, the flash on my DMC-TZ1 now only works sporadically.  Most of the time the flash photos are dark or really washed out as everyone else describes.

I haven't contacted Panasonic yet, as I had seen the charge would be $161.50 which I just can't see paying when there are better cameras on the market for not that much more.  However, since this is a widespread problem, I will see what they have to say.

OK so I went on the site tonight to try and find a way to fix the problem of my flash only working when it wants to, less and less each week, and I found all these posts. Can't say that I'm surprised, I've had mine (same model) for just about 2 1/2 years as well! Will contact Panasonic tomorrow to try and get them to fix it, thank you everyone for reporting this!

Panasonic knows about this and can fix it. It involves replacing a circuit board. I sent them my camera (Elk Grove Village, IL repair facility) at the beginning of Dec with a letter giving six web sites reporting the problem and asking them to fix it free of charge. I don't think the camera was on warranty, but I received it back, fixed, and with no charge, in about a week. Panasonic really came through on this and there is clearly no fix other than this one... except to stop trying to take flash pictures.

How to turn the flash off DMC-TZ1 camera?

On the menu set button at the bottom right at the back of the camera, if you press the right hand side of this you can change the way the flash operates from auto, auto/red-eye reduction, forced on... and the final one would be forced off. You can download the manual from enter DMC-TZ1 into the enter model box and then download the operating instructions and on page 40 it will show you how to do it.

The pictures are often too dark but sometimes too light. I have now found a work-around for this problem. It consists of doing the following:

* set the sensitivity to ISO 100
* set the flash to "A"
* take a picture with the lens cap on
* remove the lense cap and take your pictures - they should come out fine

I don't know why this works but I think that when the TZ1 does not have enough information to compute a shot, it will rely on information from previous shots. Taking a picture with the lens cap on may reset the information in the camera so that it does not rely on previous shots. Setting the ISO to 100 will prevent the over exposed shots as the software may sometimes choose ISO 400

Flash problems fix Panasonic DMC-TZ1

There is a Force Flash setting on this camera I believe. Force Flash means Always Flash(on). If this does not work, then flash is burned out I would guess.

The TZ1 has been replaced by the smaller, newer and nicer wide angle TZ3 and latest TZ5. Consider selling you defect TZ1 to a repair person on ebay, and buy you a good used, refurb, or new TZ3 or 5. Prices are very good, and your is worth about $25 to $30 with all accessories that came with it.

Flash problems

I've been in touch with one of the Panasonic repair centres and they reckon the problem is with the timing, which seems to fit with what everyone is saying. We've sent the camera off and they think it should be about £45 to fix.
