My internet comection was lost

- OK, this is what happened. I have a broadband connection, cable directly connecting to my computer (HPPavilion with XP). Yesterday, while I was on Windows Messenger, I received a virus so I ran this software to get rid of it. Fine, it was deleted but I lost internet connection. I tried to reconnect the wire, boot the computer, and everything else but no internet. However, my network connections tab says I have "Local Area Connection, Connected, Firewalled VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet" There is nothing wrong with the cable because when I plug it into my laptop, it works fine. Today, strangely enought it came on for a few min. but now it`s gone. Do you think you can help me to get it back to the prior condition?
