Toshiba Sattelite A30, random shutdowns & now cant open!

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Sattelite A30. Just a few months ago it started doing random shut downs while im on the internet and now i cant even access the desktop.

I have tried many ways like using Safe mode and selecting diagnostic startup (which loads limited services). I can now access desktop but unfortunately its obviously still in safe mode.

Everytime i change back to normal startup mode though, i get this error :

"Explorer EXE : Application Error"
The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

PLEASE how can i solve this problem?

Thanx for your help.

Well i dont quite remember from the top of my head but what i do is, yahoo messenger and a recording program etc. but they both successfully installed properly.

I was thinking maybe the application error msg occured because there were many programs and applications still on when the laptop suddenly shut down. can that be a cause though?

Yes we do have a windows install cd and i've tried many times to start it up but unfortunately i still cant access my desktop, and the computer cant detect it either.

    Thanx

taking a stab at it-- explorer is a main process of windows that runs the actual taskbar and desktop and notification area, so on. the fact that it's erroring each time means you may have a corruption in some windows system files needed to run your computer properly. this could have been from a crash, a power outage or surge, from a scandisk operation which found some incomplete files and fixed (deleted) them for you... whatever the cause, you may need to do a "repair", where you get your windows install disk, boot up to install windows with it off the cd drive, but select "repair the installation" instead of install. that will make sure you have all files you need, and will replace missing or broken files.

The only other idea I have is that you installed a program that piggybacks off the explorer interface, like an alternate shell environment, some 3rd party toolbar or menu system, or utility which puts its hooks into windows itself. That program may be erroring out, or incompletely uninstalled, and since it was so intertwined with the windows shell, it's causing the error. This would be consistent with you doing OK in safe mode, but not OK with everything loaded...

what have you installed lately before the error started?

do you have your windows install cd?

I bought HP Pavilion dv5 6 months ago and fan not working

Your cooling fan sounds to have went out, causing it to overheat and shut down.It also could be something in the fan stopping it from turning.Try cleaning it or blowing it out with it off.But it mostly sounds to have went out.

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

This problem is likely caused by overheating. The CPU reaches a temp to high and shuts the system down. When you try to turn it on the system is still to hot and it will not let the computer power on. You can try blowing out the fans and heat sink with an air compressor or can of compressed air. If this does not help the problem you may need to have thermal compound reapplied. If that does not fix it it will need a new heatsink/fan/

Hi Steven, in my experience as a tech support agent, it seems that you're having an issue with your hard drive, sometimes it might also be an overheating issue, to be clear on that, please be sure to check the temperature of the computer when it shuts down, then the first symptom of the issue seems to be the clicking sound which ussually comes from the hard drive's reading head, this might indicate the hard drive is damaged and that it cannot perform as usual. The steps to troubleshoot the issue will be as follows; First please enter the BIOS/ System Setup of the system, by pressing the [Delete] as soon as the computer turns on several times, you will appear in a black or blue enviroment with some information from your computer. Check if the issue will happen there as well. Second, if the computer gets really hot at the point when it shuts down, please ensure that all the fans in the computer are running (you should be able to hear them), And be sure of the temperature when it shuts down, we must know if the computer is too hot to touch, or there is no problem with it. Third step, how long will the computer stay on? Will it always shut down at the same time?
The best solution for this issue would be to replace the hard drive, or defective fans depending on the troubleshooting results, if you're still within your 1 year warranty with Toshiba, you should contact their tech support team to replace the part.

As an aditional step to the troubleshooting you should also try to remove the hard drive, and let the computer on for as long as its necessary, to discard the hard drive from the issue, if it doesn't shut down then the hard drive seems to be the problem.

Toshiba a30 laptop over heating problems

It is obvious that your computer shutdown because it is overheating. try to get a chill mat to place it under computer. you said that it does not shut down when is on battery??? do you play games when is on battery?....computers normally overheat during large processing tasks such us playing video games. Try to fans clear do not place your laptop ontop of your bed or anything that will obstruct the fan under computer.

See if that works

best luck
