TomTom Rider unit wont charge. Tried mains charger, USB connector and bike charger. Swapped out the battery and the unit boots up but that is just the charge in the new battery. Any help appreciated.

Power board is faulty, repair or replace. Workshop repair required. Oh, stop plugging a charger into the USB socket. It doesn'tlike it, thats for data transfer only. The round pin socket is the charger port

No desk dock came with our tomtom, spoke with Sears person and they said to contact you.

Tomtoms usually use a mini-usb connector. So you should be able to use a mini-usb to usb cable instead of docking station

I have instaled tomtom update into my laptop but how do i put it in the satnav pls

connect your tomtom to your laptop via a mini-usb to usb connector and use the tomtom home software. Or download the updates to a memory card that fits into the tomtom if it has a slot

The tomtom was working fine. Then I think I left

The 910 has a small reset button in the area of the socket. You will see a small circular notch molded into the housing near the socket. A small paperclip will fit in the reset hole. Reset the unit and it should start normally.

Tom tom one v1 Loose power connector

If the problem exists both when you use the vehicle power connector and the usb cable to your computer, then you have to assume that the problem is with the socket on the One. If it's still in warranty, I would send it back to Tom Tom for repair. Contact customer support for repair information.

Tomtom one xl usb socket broken off main pcb

I have gone around this problem by removing the internal battery, and soldering a female power connector to it.I now it on 3 aa batteries, alkaline cells givbe me an autonomy of about an hour, maybe duracells will give a bit more duration.

When i have time ,I will work on splicing the wires on the cigar plug adaptor and use that as a permanent power source. The wires for the Lipo cell are Red positive, solder this to the yellow wire( probably a battery gauge wire) and black ground.

Hope this helps

Very poor workmanship from TOMTOM

Volume is at 100% yet sound is very low/hard to hear

Hi,
Some TomTom one speakers are known to have faults develop. Usually the speaker goes ipen circuit resulting in no sound at all. other can simply go distorted. It might be that your speaker has gone faulty. ( some scrap laptops might yield a suitable replacement speaker as they often will fit )

Another fault common on TomTom one ( early version ) is the extension speaker socket on the base of the TomTom becomes dirty or it can be stressed if you have ever had need to use the socket. The socket also acts as a switch to turn the internal speaker off when the socket is uses. It is very easy to end up with a bent contact on this socket so that even when any plug is removed the switch contact on the socket remains open. This results in sound being cut-off to the internal speaker or the sound might become low or distorted.

I would recommend you check out both these possibilities . Please let me know via this forum how you get on.

Good luck.

The TomTom One is known to have sound problems on some units. The 2 main problems:
  1. The speaker is blown or distorted ( needs replacement ) ( some speakers out of old laptops will fit )
  2. The earphone socket on the base of TomTom is dirty or has bent contacts . ( slightly bent contacts will cause sound to dissapear or become broken-up )

Tomtom rider 1 not charging when on bike

TOMTOM are VERY aware of this problem. but deny it is an issue!
I had the same problem, they sent me a new shoe after weeks of emails. I told them that the shoe is not the problem, it's the connector on the back of the TT1. Because of the springloaded pins fitted to the shoe and the poor quality connectors on the TT the normal vibration on a motorcycle causes the pins to wear holes in the connectors on the TT causing intermittant connection.
As the cost of repairing or replacing these connectors is very high and there are a large number of units that would require this repair TT are ignoring it.
I'm now looking at a way of bypassing the connector altogether.
A temporary solution appears to be to smear the contacts on the back of the rider with a little petroleum grease or WD40 - seems to work for a couple of weeks at a time.

Advice

If your tomtom is out of warranty &
if you are sure you want to do this then:

unclip the plastic fascia on the front of your tomtom.
Unscrew the 4x T8s screws, 1 covered by a black void label.
Once the outer shell is off, Gentley peel off the metalic foil anti tamper / void sticker on the bottom, exposing 4x more T6s, unscrew them, you can also disconnect the external GPS connector, Unscrew the 2x T6s that secure the speaker, pull the speaker away from the metal chasis, or disconnect via the black & red connector, bend open the metal flaps, this will expose the battery, pull it out & disconnect the 3way connector, NOW FIT THE NEW ONE & DO THE PROCESS IN REVERSE !!!

It took me 20mins first time round,

Dont prod & probe the circuits!!!

Good Luck! Your gonna need it!

Let us know how it turns out!
