Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.

To reset video output settings:

  1. Turn the PS3 system off by holding the Power button on the front of the console till you see the power light turn red.
  2. Then hold the power button on the front of the console for at least five seconds until you hear a second beep to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.

Minimum Requirements

  • PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system
  • SIXAXISTM wireless controller (and USB cable)
  • AC power cord
  • HDMI cable1 (sold separately)
  • TV or display monitor with HDMI port and capable of displaying picture in HD resolution
  • Updated system software installed on your PS3
Visit PS3 System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.
  • TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port
You need to know the TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port on your TV. For instance, if your TV has multiple "Input" or "Video" channels, (i.e., "Input 1", "Input 2", "Input 3", etc.), you will need to toggle through each "Input" channel on your TV until you find the correct channel that displays the HDMI picture. This is important to remember, especially if you do not see the HDMI picture after you connect the cable and configure the PS3 settings. Please refer to the TV instruction manual for more information.

My ps3 says the mode is not supported. you can only hear the audio

This sounds like a problem with the resolution on your TV. Which means that the PS3 is trying to display a resolution that your TV does not support. Try resetting the PS3 display settings by following the instructions on this link. Once done go through the display and sound setup in the PS3. The PS3 will detect what kind of TV you have and find the maximum resolution it can handle.

My ps3 wont work with my hd/mi cable, i get a blank screen, but it does work with the rca jacks?

What you need to do is connect it from both the red/white/yellow cable and your HDMI. Go to your video input on your TV to where you can see the display. Go to settings - Display settings, and switch your input display from composite to HDMI. Your screen will go blank. Once blank, turn your TV to your HDMI input and when you see the picture, save settings and completely unplug the composite cable. You should be good to go.

If this helps, please give me a 4thumbs up!

Hi there, everything seems to be working but there doesn't seem to be a signal going to the TV. Am just about to try using a HDMI cable. Do you think this will help?

What I did was initally hook up both the composite (R/W/Y) cables and the HDMI and switched between TV inputs until I found the display. Once I had the display (mine was on composite) I went to the settings, then display, and switched it to HDMI input. The screen went blank and I switched to my HDMI TV input and saw the display. I unplugged the composite and it was good to go. I also had to hold my finger over the power button for a few seconds when turning it on - I believe it resets the display to default, but it worked. Good luck!

In the event that it gives you a hard drive error shortly after, it's nothing to worry about. You won't lose anything and it will take a few minutes to run its course. Just make sure you never turn it off from the back of the system first, always shut it off via menu options.

Respectfully,

Don

I had my PS3 hooked up to an HDMI cable, and now switched it back to the regular yellow, red, and white hook ups, and it no longer comes up on my TV. What can I do to solve this? Is there a reset button on...

The unfortunate problem is that the PS3 is now in HDMI mode and you have to be connected to HDMI to see the menu and switch to composite display. If possible connect back to HDMI to swap the menu to composite. If that is not possible then follow these instructions (I had to switch them once without HDMI so I wrote them down for future reference.):

1. Turn on your ps3 and wait a few seconds (approx. 10 seconds)
2. If you have multiple accounts on the ps3, Press ( X ), If you don't then just skip to number 3
3. Press Left arrow 4 Times ( <<<< )
4. Press Down Arrow 9 Times ( vvvvvvvvv )
5. Press ( X ) 2 times
6. Press Down arrow 2 times ( vv )
7. Press ( X ) 2 times
8. Your Done! the screen should be shown now in your standard definition TV

Hope that helps.

3. Hold the power button down until it beeps once followed by two quick beeps
