Flashing folder when i turn on mac

Your hard drive may have crashed or it's settings have changed so it is no longer recognized as a startup (boot) drive. Try starting from your original operating system CD. (or borrow one). Press the C button at power up to force your computer to start from the CD.
Once started, don't install the operating system. Go to the pull down menu's and select Disk Utility. If Disk Utility sees your hard drive, select it and run the repair disk program. If it doesn't see it, your hard drive has likely crashed. You will have to replace it, install a new copy of the operating system, and likely have lost all your data and documents. This is where I would start.

Macbook A1181 black take the Snow Leopard DVD but wont boot from it. Ejecting it. (the drive is working) and pressing C dont force it to boot from the DVD.

When you start up your computer, hold down the option key. This will bring up the bootable devices menu. Depending on wether or not you have an Operating System installed, you should see either 1 or more icons. Click on the one with the CD icon that should be labeled "Snow Leopard". Once you have clicked on the icon, click the arrow beneath it and your Mac will boot off the OS CD.

I have a new Macbook Air. It was working fine till yesterday. Today when i switched it ON, it is not booting. There is a blue screen and that is it...

Turn it on and let it boot as far as it can. Insert the system DVD that came with the machine. Hold down the "C" key and reboot (this will force it to boot from the optical drive - i.e., the DVD/CD). You should then come to the setup screen. From there, re-install the operating system.

Hello! Here is my problem; I have Gateway MX6426 laptop and CD drive went off. When I try to install Windows XP from external CD drive some problems occurred. I put CD in ext.CD drive, run clean...

Press F1, ie for Gateway to enter Bios settings.
Go to your BIOS MENU,

From "Boot options" set 1st boot to "removable drives" save the setting, ie if you are using an external CD/DVD or USB flash drive. If you are using an external CD/DVD Rom, ensure that the power supply to the external CD/DVD Rom drive is sufficient.

Try and reinstall the Operating System again.

Hope it helps, and good luck.

Dell 340 will not recognize my cd or dvd drive.

check if you see any light on the drive, if yes. then the power is there and then the problem is with the data cable of the cd drive. try to repalce the cd drive with another cd drive. if it still doesnot work and if the same cables work with the hard drive, then the cd drive has gone bad. and if the new drive also doesnot work then reinstalling the operating system should fix the problem only and only if it appears in the bios. if it doesnot appear in the bios. then the problem is not of the operating system. then its the motherboard.

CD/DVD drive doesn't work

try removing the drive from the laptop, then go into the device menu and delete the drive. Restart. Shutdown again and insert the drive, restart - it should show a "new device" recognized. If it doesn't, the drive may just have failed. I've had it happen to a dell drive - it just doesn't see the drive at all.

I have a new hard drive and no operating system for my laptop

well you donot need special programs you can use the same operating system to format, partition and load your operating system, after you connect your harddrive to your board go to setup Bios and look for the hardware that installed on your chip and you will see if your hardrive is recognized, After that load your operating system cd on your dvd rom and let the pc boot to that dvd drive, here the you will start loading the operating system, so you have to format, partition and then install windows, Try windows vista will make it easy for you.
Best Regards

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
