Question about Canon MP140 PHOTO AIO All-In-One InkJet Printer

Can't insert ink cartridges

I have just bought the Canon MP140 and can't believe how complicated it is to insert the cartridges. If I position them according to the manual's diagrams, they just wobble about and there is no where for them to click into place. The hood above the cartridge place hides everything and I can't see where they may be inserted. Should the cartridges 'stand up' with the gold technical information dots pointing upwards, or should the cartridges lie down with the cartridge number facing upwards? This is very frustrating. Please help!

By default, when you open it the dock for the cartridges is parked at the far right. And with the power off (which is how I tend to open up machines) it stays there.
Try powering the printer on, THEN open the main cover: the docks slide to the left. Then it's simple enough to put the cartridge tilted with the 'smile' lower and facing you, push it along the channel until it clicks into position.

The envelope with manuals/CD was missing for my printer so this was not easy to guess...

Are you lifting the entire top of the printer 1st? I just looked at the user guide. It shows lifting the entire top. Then put the cartridge in at an angle while inserting the rear of the cartridge hold the front of it slightly tilted down then push in until it clicks.
Here's a link to the site where I downloaded the user guide, maybe it will have better pictures that yours. Good luck. take a deep breath, don't let the machine get to you :-)

MP140 can't recognise the black cartridge that I've just installed. Error code 4 - any ideas? I've tried the manual - nothing, and not much luck online - Thanks

Error code 4 normally indicates that there is no unk, and the solution is by installing a genuine cartridge, Try to use Black PG40 remanufactured Canon printer ink cartridge. This cartridge is a high capacity cartridge which has been filled with 23ml of ink compared with the 16ml (Black) that you get with the originals. Compatible with: Canon Pixma MP140. if this error still occur it is better that you try the following procedure below:-

When you insert a refilled ink cartridge into your Pixma MP140 printer you should get a warning about the refilled cartridge. You should also be prompted, asking if you wish to disable ink level detecting. Agree to do so, and you won’t get the warnings again because the ink levels won’t be monitored by the printer.

Thanks

I placed a re-filled ink cartridges in my canon mp140 printer and

Computer chips in cartridges must be reset before the printer will recognize them as full. If you paid a shop to refill your cartridges take them back and complain. The best places will test the refilled cartridge before giving it to you.

Please note durability of prints using cheap ink is usually very poor, and as a result the manufacturers ink is usually much the better choice.
