I am assuming you are referring to playing original Xbox games on your new 360. Halo was the only game from the box that you can play directly without needing to download the patch to play but supposed newer systems have the capability to play more directly out of the box.
Other backwards compatable games can be played but you will need a samll patch for each game. The game if playable will automatically attepmt to download the patch from xbox live. So you will need to have your Xbox 360 conected to live or have a patch disk. (which is available via the Xbox Magazine disk or can be downloaded online and burned to a disk)
If this ever happens to you I recommend going to Blockbuster or something and renting a copy of the scratched up game for one day After you have done this follow these steps.
1. Insert the disk, make sure it is readable i.e. playable
2. In the My Xbox section of the Xbox Dashboard scroll all the way to the left until you have the option "play game" now press Y
3. When you press Y you will enter the game details section, scroll down to the Install Game option.
4. Wait a while for the game to install (this will take up some drive space but it shouldn't be too horrible)
5. after the game is installed you Xbox will use the downloaded files to play the game. Insert your original scratched up disk and try to play it. You should be good to go from there.
6. If this still doesn't work your disk is beyond repair
Generally, games that require an update have the update on the disk. Usually the game will prompt for update when you start to play. If this does not work, you can connect to Xbox live to update your Xbox. If you do not have an active internet connection you can download the latest update from Microsoft here. Next, unzip the file and copy the contents to a flash drive. Plug the drive into your Xbox and restart it. When it restarts it should prompt you to install the new update, which should allow you to play your game.
Make sure the disk is clean. Reinsert and try again. If it does not try to update again and it tries play the game but does not work and it is not because it cannot read the disk then go to the settings, hard drive and go to "System Cache" and delete. This will delete all temporary files. Which means all small updates for games will be deleted. I reccomend doing this as it may be an error due to the update being stopped halfway through therefore being unfinished. So the xbox may recognise that the update has been installed but because it is unfinished then it may not be able to start the game.
If this still does not work try disconnecting from the internet as it will not ask for an update and you will be able to play the game without it. If this does not work and the game does not play it may be a problem with the disk. First I would suggest playing the disk in a friend's xbox. If it still doesn't work, take the disk back to the shop and get it replaced.
As far as I know, the music does not play on a SATA drive, or on a NT based operating system. It seems to only run on the DOS based operating system, like Win 95, 98, 98SE, and ME. Frogger works fine (with music) on my older Pentium 4 with Win 98SE.
