Question about Ryobi 30 Cubic Centimeter Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer

1 Answer

My trimmer starts but will not run for very long.

When I move the Choke from the start position, and try to rev the motor it cuts out. It will in any case not run for more than half a minute or so.

It makes no difference if the Petrol is fresh or not.

mine will start and rev up and run for as long as i want to but only when it is almost fully choked. as soon as i move it to half choked it bogs and stops. i tried taking the carburator apart and cleaning it but it still does the same thing. i checked the spark plug it was good and i also dont know where the air cleaner is on the thing. i dont see any filter anywhere. do i have to take it further apart? is the filter hiding somewhere? what?

How come weedwacker tries to crank while on choke but when you move lever to 2nd position it tries to crank? but wont

When mine does that I go back and reprime repeating the process. It seems the gas does not feed up fully with the initial priming effort. Once it starts I move the choke lever quickly on way or the other to see if I can keep it running until it gets warmed up. Sometimes I have to adjust the choke setting even after it has run for a while.

These 4 cycle trimmers need to be primed 10x before a cold start. The bulb will feel *firmer* on the last two or three depressions and you'll know that the carb is primed.

Full choke and and full throttle on first tug should see it hit once with a puff of smoke. Second start attempt should be in choke position two (half choke) and with full pressure on the throttle. Should rev to life on start attempt. Let the engine IDLE for 30 seconds, moving the choke to off at the end of the waiting period. Let engine idle to warm another full minute with no choke, then set to work!

Trimmer will only run in choke position

You have a few possibilities. Make sure you have good fresh gas in the tank. You're not getting enough gas, so choking helps get more gas than air, making it run better. Could be the carb diaphram (not very expensive if you replace yourself), when they get old they don't perform like they should. Could be the filter in the gas tank is bad, plugged. Also might be just an easy adjustment on the carb Low, and High speed screws. The choke has three positions, full choke, partial choke, and no choke, which means run position.

Trimmer will start , but will not run with the choke in run posit

Is this a new trimmer or one you have used in the past?
You may already know some of this stuff but you should try them all anyway.

Be sure you allow enough time for warm up.
Normally the choke has three positions, 1.starting position, 2. warm up,
3. normal operation.
You may need be trigger the throttle to keep it running for at least a minute while warming up.
If you have already done this then here are some other things to try.

First check the cutting head. Make sure that it is not binding up. This will cause the unit to stall when power is added. Second, replace or clean, (if it's a foam type), your air filter. While the air cleaner is off spray the carburetor with some carb cleaner. Before you reassemble the air cleaner off, try starting it. Do this only long enough to confirm whether or not the problem persists. If it works great If not then, next, replace your old spark plug and recheck. Also fresh gas is a good idea.

If this hasn't solved the problem your next step will be to check the fuel system. Start with the fuel filter. Most filters can be found either in the gas tank or in the fuel line. Just take a good look and check for debris collecting on the surface. Next thing will require you to disassemble the plastic shroud surrounding the motor. This will enable you to gain access to the carburetor. Check the butterfly valves, make sure they move freely when you trigger the throttle or engage the choke. If you feel comfortable working on these things you should remove the float bowl, (bottom cap of carburetor). Make sure it's clean and that the float is moving freely. If you are still having problems then it could just be worn out. Only you know how much use it has.

Please try these in steps, testing each one before moving on to the next.
Good luck!

Stalling out

Generally with two cycle engine as soon as the engine starts the choke needs to be moved to the off or open position. Some chokes have a middle position that lets the motor run until it is warm enough to move the choke into the open position. In other words weather it is a two or four cycle engine the choke is used only to start the engine. If you unit is newer and still does not run well with the choke in the open position, you may need to adjust the hi-speed circuit to a richer one.

I have a Ryobi trimmer and when I start it will not stay on

Here was my solution:
I was having problems with my ryobi cs30 weedeater also. It would start up fine on full choke, but i could not give it more than half throttle or ever take the choke off or it would stall out. I replaced fuel mixture, spark plug, spark arrestor/exhaust, fuel lines, cleaned carb, and still nothing! I was considering getting a better machine. Then i decided to play with the carb adjustments.(on my cs-30, they are two screws on the carb that have a "L" and "H" next to them) I dont think you can get the specialty tool for adjusting the carb unless you are a repair tech, so i just took a Dremmel tool with the circular cut-off wheel to the head of the specialty screws and made them into "flat-head" screws so i could adjust them with a regular screwdriver (if you dont have a dremmel too, get one!) (As i was cutting into the head of the screws, i also cut into the casing protecting the head of the screws that was in the way, this does not cause any damage to the unit, that casing is only there to keep "un-certified" people from adjusting it for themselves.)
Now to the easy part: The "L" screw adjusts the idle fuel mixture and the "H" screw adjusts the full throttle fuel mixture. turning the screws clockwise make the machine run leaner (less fuel) and counter clockwise makes it run richer (more fuel).
-I started out by turning each screw 1/2 turn counter clockwise and started it up, then as it was idling, i started adjusting the "L" screw as i was moving the choke position to run, after a few full turns counter clockwise of the "L" screw, it was idling perfectly in the run position, then i did the same thing the the "H" screw while holding down the throttle and i got it to run perfectly in the run position. Now it is running way better than it ever has. I hope this helps everyone.
Good Luck!
