Question about Kenmore 22422 Top Load Washer

Kenmore 70 series Heavy Duty washer model 110.82872100

My washer was purchased in 1987, it has been in storage for at least 15 yrs. I have since started using it and it works fine for 2-3 loads then the problems start. The washer has to sit for at least a week before its fine again.

I do not use perm press cycle anymore because after the first rinse it will not drain, spin nor agitate.

The cotton/sturdy cycle misses the first rinse cycle, trips the circuit breaker, the console makes a popping sound at the final rinse with shooting sparks(this happens after washing my 2nd load). The popping and sparks have caused two burn holes on my front panel.

Also, I have to turn the knob several times before it will make the connection to wash and sometimes it does something opposite of what it is suppose to do i.e. spin and its filling up with water or agitating.

What could the problem be or is it time for a new washer?

I am a diy type person and would like to try and fix it before buying a new one.

I have taken the cover off and there is alot of loose burnt tissue/wrapping paper type of material everywhere under the panel (like a firecracker that has exploded) there are small amounts of black sticky stuff on the paper and on some of the wires(may be whats left of the electrical tape). None of the wiring are frayed, loose or cut, but the round plug connector thing (i was able to disconnect from the prongs) connected by two red wires is in very bad shape so i'm off to the repairman. Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

Ok, the part that was blown to smithereens turned out to be the capacitor(I had taken the kenmore washers part manual with me) and Sundberg Company had it in stock for $35.24. I have reconnected the part and have been catching up on laundary...no more tripped circuit breakers or sparks shooting out and all cycles are working perfectly.
Even though my Kenmore washer is 22yrs old Sundberg Company, Chicago, IL, (773)723-2700, www.appliance-parts.com still has parts for it.
I sure didn't want to have to buy another washer!
    Thanks everyone for you help!

You probably have a bad or burnt contact in the timer. it could have had bugs get into it during the storage. it does happen. a new timer could cost 120-150 bucks and i dont think you will have much luck with an over 20 year old washer. if you did replace the timer then what would be the next thing to fail?
save your money and go out and buy a new roper or whirlpool built unit. roper is the cheaper version from whirlpool and has the exact same parts.
you can find a new unit for about 275-300 bucks. it will be a much better choice for you in the long run.

You should have a couple screws in back or on the sides of the front panel. UNPLUG your washer and take this panel cover off. Check for loose wires and bad connections at the terminals. If you find a frayed/cut wire you can use electrical tape to fix the issue. It might be something as simple as a loose connector, but if it looks like a broken connector try to take that part to a repairman in your area for servicing.

I would advise that you leave this washer UNPLUGGED completely until you get it fixed/replaced, though. This is the type of thing that starts undetectable house fires in the middle of the night...

Most common issue is foreign material in the valve. take it apart and clean or replace it.

Kenmore Heavy Duty 70 Series Leaking in the back

If you bought a new washer and you still have a leak, i guess it was not the washer but where it drains into. Sink or stand pipe has a leak. unless you are useing the old drain hose from your old washer. Dry up everything and look for the sorse of water with a bright light when the washer drains .

What is the date of manufacturing based on the serial number of my Kenmore 70 series washer?

Tyler,
It came off of the Clyde, OH production line the 26'th week of 2001.

Amazing, ain't it? Seriously... the info is embedded in the serial number. Here's the link to the code sheet.

Please remember to rate this solution as "FixYa", OK?
