The lcd screen may be causing this. Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor and have both working at the same time by toggling Fn F8 on the keyboard. Wait until it goes black on the LCD. post back what happens. If the external monitor wont go out when the lcd does, the lcd may have to be replaced. If the monitor goes out too, it's a video card issue which may be resolved by reinstalling the driver.

Could just be your power management settings.

Go to control Panel. Open power options. The lcd screen or monitor may be set to turn off when left idle for a certain no. of minutes. You can turn that off or make it longer.

Hello,
the problem is in the light behind the LCD screen, I have the same problem, the lamp turns off...it has to be changed and that is caused by 2 reasons 1 electric malfunction or any extra charge delivered to the lamp, 2 the excessive use of the laptop and keeping it turned on for long periods.

the solution is to send it to Dell or any qualified computer repair shop and get the electric checked and / or the lamp changed.

to test this go to a dark room with no lights on (totally dark) and look at the screen you can see shades of your desktop or the windows open.

Have you checked your screen saver settings? The monitor could just be going to sleep to save power consumption. I know it's pretty basic, but normally that's all it is. I would also recommend updating the operating system. Good luck!

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that is not quite 4 years old. When I turn it on the scree shows the dell insignia, then the windows screen and then goes black. I don't know if the system is booting up or what...

Sounds like a definite no boot issue. Turn the system on to the diagnostics (Fn + Power) see if the diagnostics show a failure. If the hard drive passes diagnostics, then boot to the XP CD and try repairing the WIndows installtion

Dell Inspiron 6000 are notorious for developing screen faults. Dell won't do anything about it unless under warranty. Have the screen replaced by a repair shop unless you feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Your PC is not completing bootup. It's not the display, it's Windows.

Try booting to Safe Mode (F8) and running System Restore to a time before the issue cropped up. That should get the PC running again.
