Oil coming via the engine breather can mean a worn engine, it could be as simple as an over filled sump, or the breather valve itself is not working, the breather valve allows the crankcase pressure out of the engine.
Breather passing oil: -Oil level too high -Excessive RPM or improper governor setting -Damaged gaskets, seals or O-rings -Breather damaged, dirty or improperly installed -Piston rings not properly seated or ring end gaps are aligned -Angle of operation too severe.
I had the same problem on the same machine as yours. So hapened the breather was installed upside down... a small hole on the side of the 'cup' should be pointing downwards to allow oil to seep back in engine. Clean the breather assembly thoroughly before reassembling. Make sure to never overfill with oil.
Either the crankcase is overserviced substantially with oil or... the crankcase breather is clogged. I need your ENGINE number to help you with what to do next. Without your ENGINE number... the clogged breather is usually located on the side of the engine at the valve stem base and has 2 small bolts holding it in place. Most breathers that are clogged have to be cleaned with carb cleaner and solvent.
5 hp should have 20 oz.
1) fill the oil to top of threads (if the inspection cap is threaded into the side of the block close to the bottom)
2) if it has a dipstick, wipe the stick as you remove it, re-insert *do not screw it down, just allow it to set on top of dipstick housing.
*note: you cannot overfill unit on an inspection cap
*** you CAN overfill on a dipstick. Any more than 22-24 oz, the engine will blow it out the valve cover breather hole.
Start with making sure your oil lever is not over full. If it is it may be getting into the crankcase breather hose that goes to the carburetor hence the white smoke. Sometimes also you can blow a gasket in the breather system and it will do the same. Check for oil leaks in the breather system. Hope this helps. donnyb60
First take the carb off of the engine and then remove the bowl, carefully take the float off paying special attention to the needle and how it is attached to the float. Next, lightly blow air into the fuel inlet while holding your finger over the spot where the needle goes in. Use a bread tie with the paper scraped off. Stick the wire through the pick up tube at the bottom of the carb. Find any other holes and probe those holes with the wire. Then thoroughly wash the entire carb with carb cleaner then blow the whole carb off. Then put the float and needle back in making sure that when putting the bowl back on that it seats tightly all the way around the rubber gasket. Also, just before you put the bowl on turn the carb upside down to see if the float is sitting level. If it is put the bowl on, If not then the spot where the needle sits on the float has to be bent one way or the other just a little until the float sits level. After the bowl is put in place, the nut that holds the bowl on the threaded area should have two possibly three holes plus the hole down the center, probe all holes with the wire. put everything back on the motor and try again. If it still won't run then you will need a carb kit.
