I have a Nutone VX475 unit that continues to stop working after a couple of minutes. This was repaired approx a year ago but the unit continues to stop working for a period of time then after 5 min it starts working again. Then it stops after a couple min and the cycle continues. I'm wondering if my unit should have been replaced with another power unit.

If the unit is less than 5 years old and you have your bill of sale it will be covered by warranty. Although one of my customers said that there is a recall on the motor in this unit. That is totally unverified. However, if it is still under warranty, contacting broan/nutone will give you the closest warranty depot, or they may just deal with you directly.
I do recommend that both the motor and the PC board inside be changed.
if it stays on, the power probably isnt controlled by the power nozzle, but may be controlled by a door switch on the flapper doors where you insert the hose... Make sure all the "flapper doors" are completely shut, there's probably one stuck a little open I'm guessing...
I've gone through 3 vx475 vac in the past 7 yrs. Last one was sent to me in Apr 2010. Just yesterday, once again, my vac just quit. Green power light is on but no other sign of anything. Had a burning smell when vac quit, like motor just fried. Called Nutone again and they can't imagine whats going on but will send out another vac free and was told to throw out old one. They said dust may get into the motor and cause it to quit. These vacs aren't cheap, can't imagine that its so simple to just call up and have a brand new one sent to me. I've asked if they are rebuilt units and was told no. So my advise to you, if you haven't already, is to simply call them up w/model and serial # and they shouldn't give you any prob. good luck.
The VX series NuTone's have had some problems but NuTone is taking care of them as long as it is under warranty. You can contact NuTone at 1-888-336-6151 or whoever you purchased the unit from and you will most likely get a new unit. There are no parts available for the VX units so whenever there is a problem NuTone has been sending new units out.
if its an older unit or it got heavy use it could be the motor they tend to sputter as there going out, as it rotates the electricity hits a burnt spot inside the motor and shuts itself off can you turn it on manually? they usually put a swithc on the tank itself if the problem doesnt occur when you switch it then it could be the hose itself normally they control the off/on use a meter to check the continuity beteen the two copper plates that are on the end of the hose ( the wall end )
It's a known problem. I bought my vx550 last year in July and it stopped working this year in May. On for 5 minutes, shut down, can't run for a few hours, runs for another five minutes, etc. I called the Nutone customer service department and they exchanged the unit for a new one, cross shipped, via UPS. Mine was still under warranty though. It has to do with some defective thermostat or controller in the electronics of the vacuum.
Checked and found that motor is definitely overheating for unknown reason. Since power unit is still under warranty, solution was to contact local service company for NuTone power unit and have them come out and fix/replace it free of charge.
