I am getting a hard drive controller error when running Compaq diagnostics. The same diagnostics program says the hard drive is fine. It passes all the tests. I get a" smart hard drive detects imminent hard drive failure " message when I boot up. I press F1 to ignore & it boots up fine. Then depending on the size of programs I run it will blue screen with a error & begin a memory dump. Sometimes it will run fine until I close it out. Other times it will not even complete loading the operating system. I am running Microsoft 2000 Pro. I just ran a scandisk as well as defrag in windows 2000, no errors upon check & completely defragged the drive. I was told the controller was on the motherboard? Is the controller replaceable? Do I need a new motherboard? Everyone has been helpful so far. But, the hard drive checks out A-ok on all tests. Once again, is there anything else I should look for. Any help is appreciated.
I don't think you have a hard drive controller fault as such... more like your hard drive is going "Flakey" meaning it is developing "Bad Sectors" IE the magnetic media going bad, this is common occurance.. I think you had better backup any valuable data and get a new hard drive and transfer your "Old" drives contents to your "New" drive. There are many programs that can do this for you.. Just Google it. One could install the New hard drive as a new "Master" and set the old as "slave" install a new operating system on the "new" one and then transfer the data from the "old" drive to the "New" and then ditch the "old" ya be good to go.
