Many of Compaq And HP laptops have had several issues, including yours. You should go on their website and look up your model number and see if you qualify for a free one time fix for this problem. My wife just got her laptop back from them for one of the issues. The replaced the Mother board at no charge and the computer was out of warranty!
Hope this helps, and if it does aplease rate my solution.

The pc will not detect the wireless card. Already updated driver, BIOS, and tried a new card. I did update from Vista to 7 Professional.

Did the wireless card ever work? If it did work I would check to see if there's a physical switch on the laptop. Try switching it off then on. I would also try a different driver. Sometimes I've used an older or newer driver to get a wireless card to work. So if the driver that's installed is for Vista I would try obtaining one for Win 7. You could also try a wireless driver fro XP 64bit. I've found that some Manufacture's Web sites have several drivers listed for "network card" you could have a installed a "network card driver from HP's site but it might not be the correct version or manufacturer. From HP's site I don't see Win7 listed as an option. So you could have an incompatible driver installed. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&product=3376893

One other item to check. If you had Vista 32bit installed originally then went to Win 7 64bit you could try the Vista 64bit driver.

If all else fails you could purchase a USB wireless device to make your laptop wireless again. I picked up a Trendent

Let me know if you have any other questions?

My hp laptop shows "windows

This is a wireless network type driver that appears with Vista. Possibly downloaded as part of a windows update. Most direct solution, is to go to HP website, download the correct wireless drivers for the card in your laptop.

Uninstall the wireless network drivers currently installed ( not the lan ethernet ones, just the wireless ones) and reinstall the ones you just downloaded.

I also found this ( vistaheads website )

"Just delete the profile Windows has for your wifi and reconnect. On Vista go to Network &
Sharing / Manage Wireless Networks, click on "your" wifi and then click
Remove. When you reconnect you'll have to authenticate again but it
should be fine afterwards."

Which is another method

Recently I upgrade my 400sd4 to 512 memory, anew hard drive 160gb and loaded in vista home premium. Now my wireless adapetr linksys wireless-b causes the computer to freeze and not load. I tried loading...

I suspect your problem is with the drivers for that WiFi-B card. You didn't say what the make & model is of that card, but most manufacturers have not updated their older products for Vista (older WiFi-B & not-so-old WiFi-G cards included). If you're trying to force some older Windows 2000 or XP drivers to work in Vista, you're bound to have issues. You may need to replace that card with a new WiFi device that has drivers for Vista. If that device is USB 2.0, you'll need a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card because the built-in USB ports are only 1.1. You should be aware that this laptop supports only 1 PCMCIA card.

There are other problems with your setup, as the hardware of this system just is not up to running Windows Vista well. First, the graphics hardware does not support the shading instructions and DirectX 9.0+ needed for the "Aero" interface included with the Home Premium version of Vista. Second, Vista might run with only 512MB of RAM (the max this laptop will support), but not well; it really "likes" around 2GB of RAM or more. Third, the BIOS of this system (even the latest and last update) does not support 48-bit LBA (logical block addressing), so it can only "see" hard drives up to 137GB. Any hard drive capacity above that will not be seen by the system, and may result in some drive corruption. At best, you will not have use of the full capacity of that 160GB drive.

Lastly, even if you can get all of the Vista drivers needed for this system's chipset and such to work properly, you will probably not be pleased with this system's inability to run the "Aero" interface, or with the performance limitations when running under Vista. My suggestion would be to remove Vista and install Windows XP. That is what this system was designed for, and all the appropriate drivers are readily available -- possibly including the correct one for your Wireless-B card.

The wireless card in the notebook needs to be configured with thw router's wireless setings ie. the SSID and the encryption settings.

Samsung r60 no wireless device anymore

Download "DRIVER MAX" it's free and will scan your computer, find installed drivers and hardware, then find the latest drivers for it. I have just changed from Vista (rubbish) to XP on my Tosh. The wireless card on mine is on the ethernet card so to use wireless I had to enable the ethernet card so that driver max could "find" the wireless card. You will be suprised, as I was, how many drivers you are using are XP default drivers. And how much better your laptop runs after just a few new drivers are installed.

PC wireless card

Dear Amy -

I looked up the Verizon Wireless card, and found that its a normal PCMCIA(PC Card) type adapter. This is a good thing; it means that you can purchase just about ANY laptop that has a standard PC Card slot(NOT Mini PC Card), and it should be compatible (You might, however, find compatibility issues with a Macintosh system.)

Keep in mind you will need to install the drivers for the card on any new system, and a new laptop is likely to come preloaded with Wondows Vista, so you will need a Vista compatible driver.

You can download any necessary drivers here:

I hope this helps you!

WIRELESS INTERNET AT HOME WITH PROXIM NOT WORKING WITH Y VISTA

Make sure you enable the wireless card in device manager.
and also check the wireless card switch (switch it to enable/disable wireless card) on the front (close to headphone jack). If it isnot working, it's something wrong with your wireless card.

Try these first:

change channels to 1-6-or 11. Make sure you change all of your wireless computers4.gif.

check is to make sure you are NOT using "IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network."

You can find at setting under "Wireless Network Connection Properties" and then under "Authentication" tab of your network properties.

This particular authentication method is periodically logging you off the network and re-authenticating.

Check the adapter in device manager to make sure that windows is not shutting the adapter down to save power.

Cordless phones1.gif and wireless ethernet cards use overlapping frequencies. As a test, you can unplug the AC cords from all the cordless phones in the area and see if it helps.
