Question about Compaq Armada 1700 Notebook
I am getting a hard drive controller error when running Compaq diagnostics. The same diagnostics program says the hard drive is fine. It passes all the tests. I get a" smart hard drive detects imminent hard drive failure " message when I boot up. I press F1 to ignore & it boots up fine. Then depending on the size of programs I run it will blue screen with a error & begin a memory dump. Sometimes it will run fine until I close it out. Other times it will not even complete loading the operating system. I am running Microsoft 2000 Pro. Is the controller replaceable? Do I need a new motherboard? Is there anything else I should look for etc. Any help is appreciated.
Certain diags only test the diagnostic tracks. That is what's passing more than likely. You should boot the laptop in safe mode (F8) and click start, run, type in cmd, hit enter and type scandisk. This will do a complete scan on the drive. If there are any errors replace the drive.
