Question about Compaq Armada 1700 Notebook

Hard drive controller

I am getting a hard drive controller error when running Compaq diagnostics. The same diagnostics program says the hard drive is fine. It passes all the tests. I get a" smart hard drive detects imminent hard drive failure " message when I boot up. I press F1 to ignore & it boots up fine. Then depending on the size of programs I run it will blue screen with a error & begin a memory dump. Sometimes it will run fine until I close it out. Other times it will not even complete loading the operating system. I am running Microsoft 2000 Pro. Is the controller replaceable? Do I need a new motherboard? Is there anything else I should look for etc. Any help is appreciated.

Re: hard drive controller

Certain diags only test the diagnostic tracks. That is what's passing more than likely. You should boot the laptop in safe mode (F8) and click start, run, type in cmd, hit enter and type scandisk. This will do a complete scan on the drive. If there are any errors replace the drive.

Error 301 hard

Compaq laptop has detected a SMART fault. You should backup your data and test the harddrive with the maufactures diagnostics like Seatools for Seagate. Run a short DST. Drive may pass. I would still replace it. Clone your current drive to the new one. The drive is probably on its way out.

Compaq armada 1700-when powering the system the following error appears "Error loading operating ststem"

There is a good possibility that the hard disk drive may be failing, so if you can try running diagnostics and see if you get a failure on the hard drive.
If you can't run diagnostics, then boot to your Windows CD, press R for recovery console, then at the command prompt run the command CHKDSK /R see if you get any errors on files.
If that doesn't resolve, then boot to the windows CD press enter instead of R and repair windows.
If that still fails, then the hard drive is likely bad

I have an HP dv6700 that won't boot windows. It's running vista 32 bit with Phoenix bios on there. I have tried a recovery disk but there seem to be no startup errors nor did it find memory nor hard drive...

BIOS diags do not test RAM's Windows functionality. Download Microsoft's Memory diagnostic too and burn to a cd. then test your memory.
To run Windows Memory Diagnostic, you must reboot your computer with the disk or CD-ROM on which you installed Windows Memory Diagnostic in the drive. After the reboot, Windows Memory Diagnostic will load and its interface will appear. After loading, the first test pass will begin, using the default standard test suite, and continue until complete, unless Windows Memory Diagnostic is either paused or exited. Once the first test pass is complete, Windows Memory Diagnostic will begin a second test pass using the same settings as before. Windows Memory Diagnostic will continue to run test passes until you exit.

I get the error code 2000-0146 only when i run the f12 diagnostic

The 2000-0146 error code indicates a read/write failure of the hard drive. There is at least 1 sector that is failing on the drive. While it is working at the moment, the drive is failing and will over time degrade and eventually fail completely. Backup any important data, then replace the drive.

Dell laptop error message no boot sector on hard disk

Sounds like you'll be getting a replacement hard drive.

Here are some things you can try.
  1. Reseat the hard drive, ensure it is seen and ID'd in the system BIOS.
  2. Run diagnostics on the drive is detected.
  3. If Diags pass/unavailable, you can try booting to an XP CD, enter recovery console, see if you can run a CHKDSK /R and fix the issue.
  4. Reformat the drive and reinstall.
If the drive fails to format or fails diagnostics, replace the drive.

Hard drive controller

These can be fun and Hdd/IDE/SATA Controllers on Desktops are different than laptops.. Embedded controller chips as well as the Northbridge/Southbridge chips are integrated to everything else and its a nightmare to track down period. (Ive had to replace Integrated Modem chips to cure a Boot or BSOD error that states the Video Adapter needs to be changed) ..(Generally due to Power surge or other).. You are on the right track however and I'd just suggest running Memtest of the Knoppix to start be4 I can say other. Is there Shared or dedicated RAM for the GPU on this one? They manned both ways depending on the specific board revision..

Hard drive controller again

I don't think you have a hard drive controller fault as such... more like your hard drive is going "Flakey" meaning it is developing "Bad Sectors" IE the magnetic media going bad, this is common occurance.. I think you had better backup any valuable data and get a new hard drive and transfer your "Old" drives contents to your "New" drive. There are many programs that can do this for you.. Just Google it. One could install the New hard drive as a new "Master" and set the old as "slave" install a new operating system on the "new" one and then transfer the data from the "old" drive to the "New" and then ditch the "old" ya be good to go.

Hard drive controller problem

S.M.A.R.T (system monitoring)is the warning software that detects when a hard drive is about to fail, so i would back up any important docs to a disc or usb drive immediately and replace the hard drive. The hard drive controller itself will not be the problem, it's the controller saying that the problem is the drive, the controller is only a driver and not a peice of hardware, pressing F1 will ignore any faults and continue to boot, but especially if it doesnt always boot it's definately your hard drive.
