Question about Whirlpool MH1140XMS Microwave Oven

No Cooktop Lamps

Please Help
I replaced the cook top bulbs without unplugging the unit on my Whirlpool microwave model #MH7130XEQ-1 and I think it shorted the high low light switching transistor on the control board. Can the shorted componet be replaced on the control board,if so where can I get the control board repaired? Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

slight variation - the cooktop lights won't go off, like the switch does not work.  What is the solution?

  • huhnr Apr 10, 2009

I replaced bulbs last year (don't remember if I left the power on or not) and the next set only lasted 2 months, both burned out at the same time. Replaced twice more (again both bulbs at the same time) and now they are burned out again, so obviously something is wrong with voltage or there are surges or something. Sounds like a circuit board. Any suggestions? Can it be owner serviced or is a technician service necessary?

You most likely shorted the circuit on the control board. I usually repair the board but most techs won' do that they will only replace it

Interior bulb out in microwave oven (built -in)

It all depends on that all-important model number. So without that, we can only give a broad, generic answer.

The first step is to unplug the oven before changing bulbs!

I have a diagram at my site which helps you find & replace many GE cooktop and cavity light bulbs. It's at http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/ge_lamp_replacement.jpg

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (most often on the rear or side) and the owner's manual doesn't address it, then disassembly will be required.

You'll need to remove the outer cover (wrapper) to get to the bulb.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph, except to unplug the oven.

You'll need to remove the outer cover (wrapper) to get to the bulb.

See these links before proceeding:
http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/safety.txt
http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/disassembly.txt

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs (or 20A ceramic fuses) can be had locally in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch halogen types with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

My Whirlpool/Roper microwave/hood combo has the same problem. I replaced the bulb twice, checked the bulb and it works, but not in the microwave. I wrote to Whirlpool asking about the problem. Haven't heard from them yet.

Direct spraying of cleaners on the keypad and steam from the cooktop can short the keypad.

Luckily, it dried out. Sometimes it doesn't, and the keypad has to be replaced.

I always recommend that you spray non-ammonia cleaner on a soft cloth (not a paper towel which can scratch) and gently wipe the keypad.

And I always recommend that you use the vent fan when cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls.

Stovetop lights don't work whirlpool mh7130xeq

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.
