When you start your computer, you can press a key to get into your bios setup. I can't remember what the key is in an Acer, but it may be the del key or perhaps the F2. In any case, it should tell you at the bottom of the screen which key to press. Once in the bios, you should go to the advanced settings (if that is an option) and disable the onboard sound. If there is no "advanced" setting, then you will need to look around for that option. You can always disable the sound in Windows by going into the device manager, find the sound card that is installed, and disable it.
Sounds like the driver is missing. Do you have the driver disc, if you do then reinstall it. Have you also reinstalled the program to run cd/dvd ie Nero. You should have all the drivers on a disc that came with laptop. If not, try going to the following site and see if the missing driver is available.
If you where the CMOS battery is, there's beside it a jumper inserted in two of the 3 pins(left pin and middle pin). Remove the jumper from its original position and with it short the middle pin and right pin. This resets the CMOS ROM to its default settings minus the password. Return the jumper to its original position as before. Reboot the computer.
