Sounds like your drive has gotten the region changed 5 times already. That is the limit and now it is stuck there. This is a form of copy protection. Don't worry though, there are programs out there that can bypass this problem. Just Google the following for some of these programs.

A friend placed a malaysian cdrw or data dvd in my computer and now my cd/dvd player is juddery. Sound and dvd files play fine off the hard drive. It is the mechanical drive that malfunctions. Can you help...

it's not mechanical fault. In DVD drive, there si one thing called "DVD Regional code"

What are regional codes ?

Motion picture studios want to control the home release of movies in different countries because theater releases aren't simultaneous (a movie may come out on video in the U.S. when it's just hitting screens in Europe). Also, studios sell distribution rights to different foreign distributors and would like to guarantee an exclusive market. Therefore they required that the DVD standard include codes to prevent playback of certain discs in certain geographical regions. Each player is given a code for the region in which it's sold. The player will refuse to play discs that are not coded for its region. This means that a disc bought in one country may not play on a player bought in another country. Some people believe that region codes are an illegal restraint of trade, but no legal cases have established this.

The world is split up into 8 DVD regions:

Region 1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6: China
Region 7: Reserved
Region 8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

Old DVD-ROM drives came with a firmware level RPC-1. Software protection was used to control which region is played.

New DVD-ROM drives come with a firmware level RPC-2 with hardware protection. RPC 2 drives have a 5 change limit on regions, once the counter gets to 0 your drive is permanently locked to the last region it was set to. Even if you reformat or move the drive to another system it will still be locked to the last region. There are ways to get around it, some models have resetting tools made by 3rd parties to reset the change limit back to 5 and some also have firmware patches to remove the region lock.

Now as far as solving the problem. Just follow the below instruction.
Windows keeps track of the DVD region and after its initial setting you are allowed to only change it once more. Its possible to reset the counter by performing the following registry change:

Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)

Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

There will be a subkey (the first) of a strange format, e.g. ';t-z% with a single REG_QWORD value

Select the key and delete

Restart the computer

Upon restart you should be able to modify the region again.

I don't think you need to modify as your DVD refional counter will start from 5.

That's it.

Dvd drive wont recognize disc

There are a number of possibllities for this problem:

1. Your drive may be dirty. Try to get a drive cleaner, run it then try again

2. The disc itself is faulty. Try using it on another computer's drive and see if you can read it

3. It is a region-specific DVD. Some movies can only be played on DVD's made for that region. Although you can change your DVD's region to be able to read that DVD, you will then not be able to read DVD's for your current region. The recommendation here is to buy a multi-region DVD player. You do not need to get the top of the line model as these players can be quite cheap.

I need to change the region from 1 to 4

You have to go to the device manager of the operating system. List the hardware. Right click on the actual dvd drive and select the area that you want to change the region to. It will display the region.

DVD movie prob. w/ Sony Vaio Laptop

Please do not rate this until we have exhausted all problems that it can be. Thank you.

My name is Dean and I have a web site with some things that might help the problem. Even if it does not help it will thoroughly clean your computer of anything that is garbage and things will run better.

First uninstall any program that you have tried to use as long as you have the install disk or the program files to install them again. You will reinstall anything that you need after the computer is cleaned. These are a lot of things to do, but trust me. A woman that has been in the computer business for 25 years di this and it made a keyboard and mouse work after they had almost stopped. So plese go step be step. Follow all directions and go through all of the settings and put anything that you can to a higher setting. Advanced (and or custom) mode installs on anything that you ever install. I am going to post everything seperate as I can until we are sure that everything is clean.
Thank you for your patience, we will get the computer straight if you follow everything.

Trying to change region to 2 but it has locked me out is there a code i need

you can only change ur region codes a few times then ur drive becomes locked to the last reset.then youll need to reflash ur drive with firmware.theres a program u can get(free)called any dvd which gets around region codes.
I personally would reflash firmware.this sets drive to "0" which is all regions.
simple precedure.locate firmware,download it,write it to a cd,insert cd which then reflashes auto.remove cd.
