I had this exact same problem a while back on a PS2. Turns out that I had a power surge and some of the internal components were fried. I sent it in to Sony and they had it back to me within a couple of weeks. You may not have had a power surge, but it is still possible that something inside the system has gone wrong. Have you spilled anything on it recently? That could also be an issue. Unfortunately, it is no secret that the Playstation was a relatively buggy console, so there have been numerous problems. Assuming that you didn't have a power surge or spill liquid on it, I would say your next best option would be to call Sony and see how much it would be to fix it. It might be almost cheaper to buy a new Playstation 2, if that's possible.
Tirn console off and disconnet power supply for 30 seconds. then reconnect and turn on the console via the button on the front WATCH THE LIGHT CLOSELY - if it JUST turns on then goes off its either a dead powers supply-perfectly feasable bearing how old the thing is. If it blinks then im afraid your console is dead and a replacement will probably be cheaper than repair. New power supplies can be ordered in by GAME or GAMESTATION if not in stock
Try pulling the power adaptor out of the back of the ps2 ,then make sure no dust or debree is in the part that plugs into the ps2 then plug it back in and make sure its attached firmly. The ps2 should turn on now
