Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

1 Answer

Constantly 'Finding Hardware'

My 1 month old Inspiron has started 'finding hardware' at random. It brings up an icon in the tray saying hardware has been found (as it would when you connect for example an ipod). However it also disappears within seconds - not enough time to click into the icon and see the name of whatever it is finding. It occurs especially if the laptop is being moved but not exclusively. This problem of course occurs when nothing is actually connected to the laptop and I have made sure the power cable is firmly connected.

On  Windows XP right clic on My Computer, clic on Properties --> Hardware --> Device Manager , identify the "New" unknown hardware, it gotta be under a big yelloy question mark, once identified you can right clic on it and clic "Disable" or if it happens to be a necesary device, look for its drivers and install it.
Good Luck!!!!!

Hello Mpquinn,

The first thing that I would advise you to do is,

Uninstall the WiFi Adapter totally from the System first,

(For WIndows XP)

Right-Click on my computer Icon, Properties-->Hardware-->Device Manager,

select the WiFi Adapter under network adapters, and right click on it, then select uninstall

Next, Click on Action on that Same page, and select "scan for hardware changes",

This will bring up a prompt to install the new hardware found (Which is your Wifi Adapter).

(For WIndows Vista)

Right-Click on my computer Icon, go to

Properties-->>Device Manager, select the WiFi Adapter under network adapters, and right click on it, then select uninstall

Next, Click on Action on that Same page, and select "scan for hardware changes",

This will also bring up a prompt to install the new hardware found (Which is your Wifi Adapter).

After this, Press your Wifi button on the system and ensure that it is On, then Scan for wireless networks.

It should connect like that.

Try this out and kindly let me know how it goes,

Hope this helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Goodluck

You need the sound driver for the motherboard. What kind of computer? You can usually find these files some where on the web. But really Windows 98 is old. You might have trouble finding the driver. Perhaps you have an original computer disk that has the sound driver on it.

Need icontact drivers

Hi, I can't find a direct link from the manufacturer. You can try either of these suggestions:
1. You can try this to update Ezonics drivers
- or -
2. You can try updating the driver directly from windows.
  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Locate the hardware device you wish to update drivers for.Click on the [+] icon to expand the categories.
  3. After finding the hardware you’re updating drivers for, right click on the hardware’s name or icon and choose Properties. In this Properties window, click the Driver tab.
  4. Click the Update Driver… button. The Hardware Update Wizard will begin.
    Hope this helps!

The pilot keeps going out every few days

Replace the thermocouple. It looks like a 1/8" diameter copper wire without any coating on it and goes from the gas valve to the pilot. They come in different lengths so bring the old one with you when buying a new one. Better hardware stores that sells gas space heaters will be a better chance at finding one.

Randomly turns itself off.

This is the point that you should bring your computer into your nearest tech support center. There is probably a problem with your hardware because of its age, or some physical damage has happened to it. This will be around a 100 dollar fix.

Microsoft Vista Rebooting on its own

This could be a driver issue, a hardware issue, or a software issue.

Steps to find out:

1. start computer in safe mode. if problem persists it is probably a hardware failure of some sort. likely a failing hard drive (that or a really nasty virus). if problem does not occur in safe mode goto step 2.

2. install latest drivers and updates on computer. problem persists goto step 3

3. try to close all un-necessary programs (including firewalls/anti-viruses) allowing one or two or three back at a time until you find the buggy program if there is one. no buggy program goto step 4

note: step four is usually what computer technicians do so if you aren't good with computers take it to a tech who knows what he's doing!

4. I would suggest wiping your HDD as finding the problem is too tedious at this point. but if you like tedious run some system diagnostics and scan your HDD from another PC. the results of these tests should be self-explanatory as to the problem. (busted hdd/virus/failing hardware) :)

on XP try the "<" circle on the system tray and look for the USB device manager, disconnect from there.
If it is not there, or older systems try Start, Control Panel, System icon, Hardware Tab, Device Manager button. Find the Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click on the Device and select disable in the floating menu. that should allow you to remove the device safley.

The wireless doesnt work

first open your device manager to make sure the hardware and the drivers are functioning properly. control panel add printes or other hardware, then system will be in the upper left side menu. then click on hardware, and then device manager. if it's working you'll see it under network devices but if not you'll see a yellow question mark that says ethernet controller. click it then click 8uninstall then the found new hardware wizard should start up for you to just reinstall the hardware.

hope this helps. keep me posted.
