Several things might cause this.

1st off is that your drive will only compress if the backup software tells it to - so ensure your software is asking the drive to compress.

There is also a dip switch on the bottom of the drive that will disable compression - i think it it switch 3 on the underside of the drive on the main pcb

Anytime I try to backup or copy a 33GB data file on a 40GB or 72GB Data cartridge, it requests for more data cartridge even after formatting the data cartridge prior to starting the process. Sometimes, the...

Because the DAT72 can copy 72GB with 2:1 compressed, and it's native capability is 36GB in the most. So you can try to copy less than 30GB data to it or try to enable the drive's compress mode.

How to configure or enable hardware compression in DW065B LTO1 Drive. When trying to take backup in H/w compression mode the tape (100/200 GB Tape) is ejected.

The L&TT support ticket contains drive configuration information such as whether hardware data compression is enabled or not.
Use L&TT to pull the ticket then look in the Drive->Drive Configuration section for details.
Here's an example:
|__ Drive
||__ Data compression : Enabled
||__ Current block size : Not available
||__ Detect WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Reads after WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Media removal (software controlled) : Allowed
If data compression is not enabled then it is likely that it has been turned off by the backup application. Check the options in your application to ensure that software compression (done by the server) is turned off and hardware compression (done by the drive) is turned on.
Data compression can be turned on in the drive by
  • The application ( the application will usually override the drive configuration so configuring the application correctly is of prime importance)
  • Resetting the drive
  • Power cycling the drive
  • Using the L&TT Set Drive Configuration utility (use the options to enable compression -see the L&TT user guide below)
NetBackup usersCaution NetBackup will turn off hardware compression in the drive at the end of each backup, so when you look at it with Library and Tape Tools it will be off. This is actually normal for NetBackup, so please check the configuration of NetBackup to make sure that compression is configured correctly. In this case see 'Measure Compression Ratio' (go back one level) as that will show whether compression has been in operation in the drive.
Click here to download the free L&TT utility (www.hp.com/support/tapetools) - this will also access the L&TT user guide
Use the L&TT FAQ to find out how to pull a ticket.
Click here for the L&TT FAQ. (www.hp.com/support/lttfaq) Look for How do I generate a support ticket? in the contents.

Tape backup is very slow through output 250mb/min

What software are you using for the backup? If it is Data Protector, uncheck the software compression on your Data Protector window.

Just the fact that /dev/st0 exists indicates that the OS sees the tape drive. When you say you are "moving the data to tape drive" just how are you doing this? Have you read the dump man page?

Tape Drive Block Size

Bit of an odd one but i agree that block size could cause an issue.

Try this link for the HP tech manual for this drive.

http://www.tag.com/tech%20support/System%20Resources/Drivers%20&%20Utilities/Drivers/Current/7.2/HP%20DAT%20Storage%20Works/guides/unix.pdf

It may help with your issue and does detail block size changes on some systems.
