If you take off your bezel cover underneath the display you'll find the inverter or if necessary you can get a tech to help install. Usually theres a series of beeps when you get a blank screen. Hp pavilion laptops also get hot on the keyboard after a while from long term use and zd 8000 came out about 4 years ago so the display should be a pretty good looking glossy screen. Those are nice laptops to work with by the way.
a power surge could have caused this problem, as you so rightly assumed. motherboards-cpus et,c. are prone to fail or malfunction. even with static electricity.
it could also be a sign that, the tft ( screen ) has faults or the cfl (tube) or inverter have suffered damage.
