Question about Canon PowerShot S400 / IXUS 400 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Mode Switch will not switch to replay

The mode switch on my S400 will occasionally not switch to the replay and there is just a black screen. Sometimes it will repaly after a delay of time. Then it will start working fine and I will not have any more problems with it. What can cause this problem to just happen once in a while? Can this problem be fixed? Thank You for your help.

Re: Mode Switch will not switch to replay

This could be a main board problem or a simple loose connector Canon customer service will advise of a repair possibility- It may be pricey

I have a canon sx30 IS. I can no longer get it to play back. The camera still takes photos and video as I can take the card and see them on computer. Any idea what is wrong?

First test to see if the Replay (single right arrow) button actually works. That may be the problem. That button does two jobs. 1st it is supposed to enter the replay mode to show the last picture taken first. Apparently, from your description of the problem, that is not happening. To verify it is that switch that is dirty or defective, power up the camera, press the Replay button firmly just once, press the left arrow on the circular switch once. Wait until the lens retracts (about one minute). Then press the Replay button firmly once more. The camera should power down. If it doesn't, that proves the Replay switch is dirty or defective. Post the results of this test if possible.

LDC Monitor remains black. Have reset the default

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Affected cameras with this problem include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S230, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Turn on camera but the lcd sceen is black

Have you checked the display mode you're in? If you have the display set to off (to save power) and also the picture review time set to off, then you'll just see a black screen. Try pressing the 'Disp.' button below the screen when the camera is on - it should cycle through different settings with each press: Off, On, On with picture info. Similarly, in the playback mode this will show you more or less info about the picture you are viewing.

Even if the display is switched off, if you have your 'review' option in the menu set to anything other than Off (i.e. 2 seconds), then you should see the picture you've taken appear on the screen straight after taking it.

If it's not that, then I don't know the answer....

Can't take pictures

Defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

Canon A70 stays in replay mode

Gerry, The mode switch is a very common problem that causes the camera to remain in either play or camera mode. The stem breaks off the top of the switch and no longer functions. If this is not the case, the flex harness (operations unit) can get torn on top if the camera has been dropped. If the switch appears to be good, check for ground switching between the two outer legs of the switch, the micro gets a low signal from the mode switch to determine what state the cameras in. Good luck, this is a nice camera! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (
