In having problems with connecting to the internet

My Internet provider came to my home to set up the internet to my desktop however he says that Im unable to connect due to my network adapter not being installed. It was before I switched providers but now I see a yellow question mark with the words Ethernet Controller listed. How do I correct the problem without going out to buy a wireless adapter?

Go to control panel>>system>>hardware manager.
uninstall the ethernet controller.
restart the PC let eh machine find the driver.
or you can find a working PC and download the NIC driver for your PC.

My compaq presario 5240 w/ win 98 wont connect to the internet

make a menu on top toolbar right click in top toolbar
select menu bar this will add file edit view fav tools and help

click on tools then from the drop down list internet options connections tick in never dial a connection

then you will have to add your isp internet service provider
first you must have an ISP Internet Service provider contract which will provide you with a modem and leads you can choose either a dial up usb or

an ethernet connection to connect to the internet or
if you have a laptop you can choose a wireless usb modem
which can work on a desktop aswell once you recieve the modem just insert the disk provided and follow the prompts to set up your new internet connection

during the setup process you will be asked for a password I suggest you make a log of all pass words used outside of your computer incase of memory lapses

hope it helps

It wont connect to the INTERNET im frustrated

If you could provide more information it would be much easier to come up with an solution. But for example you could try to right click on your internet icon and press repair. This will make Windows try to automatically solve your internet connection problems. This works sometimes, but not allways.

Go into control panel, network connections and delete or remove the existing connection, reboot and then go back into control panel, network connections and click on new connection or set up a small home or office network. Run through the wizard and everything should become clear..

IPAQ Internet Appliance

You inquire on your nearest Internet Service Provider (ISP) for a DSL plan. DSL provides a bandwidth 3 to 4 times of the dial up.

My new pc Dell Inspiron desktop has no modem built in for dial-up internet connection. Im currently subscribing to a dial-up service provider on another pc, how do I connect to the same dial-up service...

You have to configure Internet Connections Sharing on the PC which has a dial-up service.
1. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network Connections, right click on dial-up.
2. Clik on Properties, click on Advanced tab.
3. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box

After that you must connect the other pc to this one via network cable.
If you don'y have network adapters you have to buy them.

My laptop will connect with the internet though a home router. At a hotel or airport it will not connect with the internet service provided by these places. What is wrong

More information needed:
Does your laptop have a wireless adapter?
How do you connect at home? (wireles or ethernet cable?)
What brand of laptop do you have?
What troubleshooting steps have you already taken?

For your information, when away from your home network, you must change your wireless settings to point to the hotel or airport provider where you are trying to connect.

Usually hotels have some contact information and some basic support (some better than others) for their wireless connections.

Internet connection

Hey dadof9,

Depending on how you normally connect to the internet, the cause of this problem may vary.

If you have high-speed internet service through a company like Time Warner or Comcast and have a physical wire running from your computer to the router, you may want to make sure that your internet connection is set to use a local area network connection. In Windows XP this can generally be done by clicking on the "Tools" link at the top of any Internet Explorer page, selecting "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu, then clicking on the "Connections" tab in the window that opens. You'll want to make sure that your connection type is set to "Never dial a connection," or your computer will continue to look for the internet using a dial-up modem.

Should your home use a wireless network instead, your computer may not be able to access the internet if the network is WEP or WPA/WPA2-encrypted, your computer has not been added to the router's MAC filters yet, your computer has the incorrect DNS settings, or if the computer isn't able to pick up the wireless router's signal.

Addressing problems with WEP or WPA encryption, MAC filters and DNS settings generally does require some home networking knowledge, so if you're not quite sure how to adjust these you may want to speak with your internet service provider (ISP) for more information. Many ISP's are able to provide step-by-step, over the phone support and troubleshooting for networking issues, and may even be able to send a technician to your home to help you get things up and running again.

Signal problems however, can prove to be a little more difficult to remedy. If you live in an area with a high concentration of wireless network devices (or own several others yourself), you may be receiving interference from the other wireless devices in your neighborhood. Typically, changing the channel on which a wireless device broadcasts will improve this type of situation, but there are no guarantees that your neighbors aren't thinking the same thing. Additionally, how homes are constructed may interfere with a wireless connection. While surfaces such as wood and plaster do not cause much interference, any metallic, brick or stone surface may cause a significant loss in signal strength.

Please keep in mind that these are by no means the only reasons why you would not be able to establish an internet connection, and that your best bet is to generally contact your ISP if you have any doubts. Third party technicians (such as Geek Squad® agents) may charge you for any services rendered, though many ISP’s will provide networking services for their subscribers free of charge.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
