Screen goes blank and requires a soft reset with "memo"

Every time I try to access the "memo" screen, my Palm goes blank and gets stuck until I do a soft re-set. What's going on? Should I try a hard re-set?

I believe that this problem relates to the BlackScreenOFDeath or BSoD - which is caused by a low or weak battery allowing the CONTROL Logic circuits to get into an invalid state where the ON/OFF/SLEEP/CHARGE/ FUNCTION transistors are niether on nor off. I would recommend getting a new battery as soon as possible. Doing a SOFT RESET "may" get you temporarily going again. DO NOT do a HARD RESET !. I have posted many discussions on the Z22 that you may find helpful, on my tiny website,
http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
One other possibility, is to take apart the Z22, and wipe the buttons and traces with a soft damp cloth to remove oils, water, and possible spilt liquids from the touch/snap/button/discs areas. Even the tiniest trace of conductive liquids will short out the logic circuits, causing "unknown: states on the control circuits.
My answer on the BLack ScreenofDeath, is as follows:
__________________________________________________
The Z22 suffers from 3 problems. One of these is the Black Screen of *****. I got a used Z22, and over the years discovered this problem. The small battery was a perfect fit of power and size when manufactured, decades ago, but, time alone has deteriorated the capacity, so that a "NEW" , sealed-in-the-box Z22 today, has a weak, dying battery that needs replacing. These are $10 free shipping from China. The BSoD seems to be caused by a dip in power from the battery to the LOGIC CIRCUITS that control the ON/OFF/SLEEP/CHARGE, etc states of the Z22. If the logic gets out of sync, the unit is in an INVALID state, will not charge, nor respond to the LOGIC buttons on the front - these buttons are NOT the standard ON/OFF buttons from the past that mechanically connected or diss-connected power. All the buttons on the Z22 are touch snap disks that are connected to transistors, to flip logic states. THUS, is the power in any of the transistors gets low, the transistor is neither ON nor OFF, and the control circuits are in a messed-up state. Or another way of looking at it, the ON button is a logic gate on a transistor network, and the only way to activate the "ON" logic state, is with full power to the circuits! -- the power on the Z22 is ALWAYS ON. . . The screen may turn off, and the chips may go into "sleep" mode, but the Z22 is always on. SO if there as a weak battery, you may get the random Black Screen of *****. The GOOD news, is the the DATA and programs that you purchased are incredibly SAFE, as long as you do NOT do the HARD RESET (which someone suggested ! (NOT ) ). I have ripped apart the Z22 dozens of times, and subjected it to freezing and heating and all sorts of horrible things, the data has always been 100% reliable, -- stored in permanent memory. There is a quick way to get rid of the BSoD - you have to open the unit and cut one of the two battery wires, wait 2 minutes to kill the logic circuit power, then re-connect. I added a switch on the Z22, just for this purpose. I would recommend, if you get the Z22 re-powered, to get a new battery as soon as possible. This should clear the BSoD for a while. See my tiny website :
http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.htm
There are many photographs and step by step procedures to try to get the data off the device, maintain the Z22, get parts, and use the Z22 with the new 64 Bit Windows computers. The BEST way to use the Z22 would be to get an old Widows 32 bit laptop (ie WinXP), and simply connect the Z22 in a standard way using the software that it was designed for... The new patches to 64 bit machines, are very limited, and many previous features do not work.
So the bottom line - all your data, information, and programs are safe. You simply have to reset the LOGIC CIRCUITS (this has nothing to do with the PALM Z22 SOFT and HARD Resets !) - it has to do with disconnecting the power from the battery, or waiting until the battery is COMPLETELY DEAD ! (which can take a long time! )...
Good luck

Cannot select or delete a memo item.

I had this happen and the way I got around it was to delete the memo entry from the desk top and then set hotsync so the desktop to overwrite the handheld and force the new memo data into the z22.

I don't know what the root cause is. The problem is a corrupted data file but no idea what causes this other than something that can interrupt the writing of the file data. It might happen again as all this does is fix the error not the cause. Having said that I had this happen a few times within a short time then have never had it since (a few years).

Palm Treo 700W Smartphone is stuck on speaker phone

Hello,

Soft Reset
A Soft Reset stops all active (or open) programs and "reboots" the handheld. When the Treo powers back up, you'll start with all programs closed and the unit will be ready to use. The soft reset is intended to reset the Treo if it is malfunctioning or has become bogged down.
The Palm Treo 750 can be soft reset by quickly pressing and releasing the tiny red button beneath the miniSD memory card door:
diagram.jpg Hard Reset
A Hard Reset wipes the internal memory and returns the Treo to its factory specs, in effect returning the Treo 750 to the state it was in when you purchased it. All data entered, preferences set or software installed on the Treo after purchase will be lost after a hard reset and will have to transferred or reinstalled via ActiveSync / Windows Mobile Device Center.
power_button.jpg The Palm Treo 750 can be hard reset by pressing and holding the power button (seen left) while at the same time pressing and holding reset button beneath the miniSD memory card door. Press and hold the two buttons until the screen completely fades. When the screen returns, you'll be given the option to "Erase all data." Select Yes to complete the hard reset. The Treo will now be as it was when it left the factory and you can start fresh. You may have to perform a soft reset after the hard reset to get the unit to power on.

PDA won't respond to stylus taps--intermittent problem

You may want to try cleaning the inner perimeter of the screen where it meets the plastic bezel. Sometimes dirt or grit gets caught there, causing a screen press that is way out of alignment. To do this use a slice of business card, or a folded piece of paper to try and scoop out any of the dirt stuck in the corners. Otherwise, I know of no solution that would not require taking the device apart. Palm knows it is an issue however and if your under warranty I would recommend getting it replaced.

I have an entry in the memo feature of my palm. Everytime I try to access the information the palm goes black and reboots? What causes this to happen and how can I retrieve the information?

When a Palm OS device reboots like that, it shows that there is a driver conflict. Somewhere along the line some software that was installed is conflicting with other software on the device and causes the reset. I would suggest deleting applications from the device one by one and testing after each to see if the reset is still happening. If you are using the Palm Desktop software that came with the device and performed a Sync (backup) after you created the Memo... it should be saved and accessible in the Desktop software (Memo tab). If no Sync was performed after creating the Memo, you will need to remove applications one at a time until the software conflict is removed allowing you to run your device without the constant reboots. It's a bit of a tedious process, but the only solution if you didn't back up the device after creating the memo you are trying to retrieve.

Hope that helps

Dropped Palm now only displays blank white screen

You can try a hard reset, but you will have to sync before and after as it will go to factory starting point.

Push the reset and power button at the same time, it should ask "are you sure", when it restarts you will have to go through the set up as if it was new.

Hope this helps.

My screen goes blank every time I try to access the "memo" menu and I have to do a soft re-set to to turn it on again. Any suggestions?

I would do a hard reset...but after you are sure have backed up your data, as it will wipe back to factory settings....

1...While holding the power button, use the tip of the stylus (or a similar object
without a sharp tip) to gently press and release the reset button inside the hole
on the back of your handheld.
2... Wait for the Palm Powered™ logo to appear, and then release the power button.
3... When you see the message that warns you about erasing all of the info on your
handheld, do one of the following:

• Press Up on the 5-way navigator to finish the reset and show the touchscreen.
• Press any other button to do a soft reset.

Palm Tx problem after hotsync

I had the same issue, the palm is stuck in a loop,
I got mine out of this by pressing the power button while the palm was on the screen where the bar goes across the bottom, it asked me if I wanted to erase all data, I said yes, and it reboot normally, I went thru the setup, and all is o.k.
I did have to try this several times, but it eventually worked. Hope this helps, although it looks like this is an older question. I hope you have resolved it.

Memos soft resets device

Sounds like you may need to clean out your memos. Are you talking about the memo icon on the screen or do you have a memo button on the button panel. If you have a memo button, there may be something wrong with it, and you may have to use the icon.

PDA intermitently powers up then freezes on "Palm Powered" screen

I had the same issue. What you need to do is to hold the power on/off button than press the reset button. The screen turns off (get black) than the will ask you to make a hard reset (which end up deleting all datas). The Palm will power on like the first time you turned it on after you bought it. Than depending which version you have it will possible ask you which language you will like to have as default. After selecting you neet to setup the rest. If this is done you sync it all data will come back :-)
