Hi, I had a very similar problem with my Zumo 550. It turned out to be the SD card. I had an 8gb card full of MP3 tracks and the unit indexes them before working properly.

I removed the SD card all was well again

It says tha it cant navigate without maps

It's likely that the maps have become unselected. To solve this problem;
  • Press TOOLS (the spanner symbol on the page that has WHERE TO and VIEW MAP
  • Press SETTINGS or LOCALE on some models whichever your model has.
  • Press MAPS
  • At the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO
Your map name should be on this screen with a tick beside it if it's selected. If it's not selected press the map name and the tick will appear. This should solve the problem.

If this does not solve the problem the maps may be locked. Details on how to unlock your maps are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing
There's more information there than you need so skip down to the section on unlocking maps

I am not getting satalite signal on my tom tom xl

The most common problem to this is because the TomTom doesn't know it's current location.  It may be that you last used your device a long distance from where you currently are now.  I don't know how long you waited for the gps signal to acquire but it can take up to 10 minutes (even on military aircraft if they don't know current location).
Power it up and press on the signal strength icon.  That will bring up your satellite tracking status.  If it don't look like it's doing anything, then your gps has probably malfunctioned.  If it looks like it's acquiring satellites, then give it a good amount of time (10-15 minutes) to see if it can find your location.  I recommend doing it outside of your vehicle with no satellite obstructions to make the process go faster.
Good Luck

New Garmin 330 stuck on kansas

Take the unit outside and turn it on. Then select View Maps, at the top of the screen it will say either "Locating satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Once the garmin has locked onto the overhead satellites, then it will say "Ready to Navigate".

Locating Satellites take longer than Acquiring Satellites.

Can't change location-appears as if still in Kansas despite downloads

You need to go outside and turn on the Garmin until it has acquired a satellite lock (15-20 minutes). Kansas is the default location (Garmin Headquarters). Once you have acquire satellites, the Garmin will remember the last position as the starting position when the power is turned off. You know you have acquire a satellite lock once "Ready to Navigate" appears on the top of the screen.
