Well now, wouldn't you think Brother would be monitoring this and other sites and offering their notion of fixing the problem? Nah. With my beast, the left of center vertical lines (two heavy with lighter ones in between) run more than 1/2 page length, but only in doc feeder mode. Flatbed mode working ok. Someone should rip off the feeder, disassemble, clean, and explain how that could possibly fix the problem. As far as cleaning the narrow glass strip at the left side of the flatbed, (clearly shown on the machine itself as if black line syndrome is expected regularly), someone should try that and explain how that could possibly fix the problem. Didn't do squat at my house.

The small glass surface at the top of the scanner bed had some gunk on it. I scrapped it off and the line went away! Yay!

If the black lines comes when using the ADF (top feeder), try to see if you get the same problem when using the scanner glass or receiving faxes. If you don't, you simply have to clean the glass strip to the left of the a4 sized scanner glass. Wipe it with a dry cloth piece, no paper and no water/alcohol. If you see some dirt there that you're unable to simply wipe off, try to use a cotton wool to "rub" it off.

If it's under warranty you're in luck, you need a new printhead,LK3197001, around $80.00. I just replaced one yesterday in the shop for the same problem. I would call Brother customer service and see if they'll help cover the cost.
