Question about Toshiba Satellite M45-S165 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba M45-S165 startup issues

1 - push power button
2 - internal fan comes on
3 - shortly thereafter, computer shuts off...
4 - followed by computer turning back on

This cycle repeats several times and then stops, unless computer "starts" and continues the startup procedure. Otherwise, I have to push the power button again. And again. And again.........

Occassionally it will start up right away (no "cycling" on and off). Normaly it takes a few times of pushing the power button. Very occassionally it may take many minutes before it "catches" and starts.

It's done since since new.

Very occasionally it takes an extremely long time to fully boot, but normally the actual boot process runs "normal" once past the on-off cycling.

Other than the start-up issue (and a cracked screen that I will fix shortly) the computer runs great.

Any ideas / suggestions?

Way past warranty. Like it's owner. :-)

I was hoping it might be something ... simple.

Unfortunately it isn't to be, unless one considers laptop replacement as a simple solution. ;-)

I'll just keep saving up my dimes for a new one.

    Thanks for your input!

if the computer is still under warranty i would return it for another. i think this is a problem with your motherboard or power supply. Of course it could be a faulty switch but doubtful.

This is normally a motherboard issue. I had one with the same symptoms and I had to replace the motherboard. Worked great after the board was replaced. I had to replace the board because unlike your issue mine stopped working all together. It did take a while before it quit though. Just a note: I have had to replace several of these motherboards for customers as well. If your LCD is broken, you may be better off to save your data and put it in a new laptop that would include a warranty unless your super fond of the machine or you have access to inexpensive parts.
Hope this helps...

How to replace RAM in Satellite M45-S165

You can click on any photo to enlarge it.

Step 3 photo shows the Memory Compartment.

Two ram memory (SO-DIMM) can be used. There are two ram memory slots.

1GB however, IS the largest amount for EACH slot.

I am trying to reset my toshibe m45 s165 to its factory settings, but when i try the whole press "0" and power at the same time, the laptop keeps turning off since im holding the power button,...

Do not hold the power button down while pressing the "0" key - it'll shut the computer off again. You just need to push it once to turn the power on and then hold the "0" key immediately after you push the power button on - just like turning on the laptop, but this time you're holding the "0" key down.

Toshiba Satellite M45-S351 BIOS password needs help!

BIOS passwords on Toshiba notebooks have to be reset by an authorized service technician who has the CD available to run the utility.  Their notebooks don't contain a battery reset to erase the password.  It was done as a safety feature to prevent theft from happening and it is a very good one.
If you take it into Best Buy or a computer dealer to get it done, you might have to prove that you are the new owner of the computer before it can happen.

Locating the cmos battery in a toshiba satellite m45-s165

Hi,
If you have disassembled your toshiba unit, and you are somewhat new in electronics, you cannot see the battery similar to other PC, bcoz its battery is somewhat soldered, and the only things you migt notice is its two colored wire (black and red) attached to a round, flat, insulated (wrapped with insulation) battery.
