We use an air hammer , put a different bolt in the shaft or nut
vibrate the shaft with the air hammer while pulling up on the pulley
you can not use a puller ,

Have a 16hp single cyclinder motor want to get newer motor what kind would fit

it would be best if you replaced it with the same size. that way everything will bolt and hook up easily. if you change it you get into different size shafts, pulleys, belts. it can get really expensive fast and still not be right.

How do you change the drive belt that runs to the motor. I can't even figure out how to get the old blet off.

first -make a diagram of the belt position
next there will be adjuster pulley/s or spring loaded pulleys to release to loosen the belt
you may have to remove cutter drive belts to assist in the replacement
get diagrams of how they are before removing them

My poulan pro rider mower runs but won't move

Hi Kristy:
If you're lucky, the drive belt has come off.
If you're not so lucky, the drive belt has broken.
Most machines are similar to this.........
With the motor OFF, find a comfortable way to lie down and look under the machine. There will be a pulley under the motor, and a v-belt should be loosely around it.
The belt will go toward the back of the machine, past one or 2 idlers, and then around another pulley at drive.
If the belt is off any of the pulleys, put it back on.
Withe the motor OFF (I said that before but it's important), have a helper step on the Forward/Reverse pedals and watch to see what happens to the drive belt pulleys.
If the drive belt does not tighten up, try to figure out why. When you do, you'll be back cutting grass.

Need to change the spindles on model 917.273220 craftsman tractor

The job is much easier and safer with compressed air and an impact. I would try really hard to find someone with air to borrow but if no air is available then wedge a piece of 4x4 between the blade and deck to keep the blade from spinning. BEWARE, the board can pop out and the spinning blade can be dangerous. Remove the deck from the unit. Remove the pulley first, hold the blade with your hand ( only if you have air/ impact) to prevent the spindle from spinning. Note the washer under the pulley. Then remove the blade, then the spindle bolts. Most AYP replacement spindles now come pretapped but if not place spindle in a vice and use one of the old spindle bolts ( they are self tapping) to make threads in the mounting holes. Then mount the new spindle in reverse order being sure to instal the washer between the spindle housing and the pulley. Again hold the blade with one hand and securely tighten the pulley nut with an impact. Also the unit probably has a blade brake arm and the spring holder is mounted by one of the spindle mounting bolts. Pay attention to its positioning before removal. If you have a heavy duty replacement spindle the notch on the bracket may not fit the new spindle. with a file or grinding wheel enlarge the notch on the bracket to fit.

I have a craftsman walk behind lawnmower and my pull string will not start the motor and it doesn't lock

The small metal peice is the engagment pawl, it sits into the plastic pulley, if it has come out the pulley will probably be damaged as well, you will need to remove the pulley securing screw and big washer, you should now see the slot in the pulley where the pawl sits.

My belt on my deck is not in line with the pulley on the rt side it is running higher

Deck pulleys (not the spindles that hold the blades) sometimes run in a plastic bushing, and there can be washers above or below the pulley too. Any of these can wear out, which can tilt the pulley, or let it slip to the wrong position on the shaft. With the belt off, the pulley should spin easily and not be able to flop up an down or wobble. If there's a problem, take out the bolt and look at the pulley assembly pieces for wear, and replace if needed.

My Cub cadet pto cluch bearing is froze up on my 2518 lawn tracto

A medium length extension (stuck through the grill), a swivel and an impact is all you need to remove the pulley with the frozen bearing. It's just a bolt, a washer, and a lock washer holding it on. You just need to remove the pulley to see if the bearing is stuck. Take the pulley to your local shop that can press bearings and you can be up and running for $20 dollars instead of $300. Here's a diagram I found on partstree:

I need to take the pulley off from under the motor so I can change out the belt.It keeps turning how do I lock it down.

Use a pair of Vice Grips, or similar, and grab the shaft behind the Pulley if possible and "Lock" it against something to stop it rotating.
